One thing working against Emile was the fact that predraft year he was a nobody. He had only played his first season in the Q, which for a 1st rounder, even a late one, is rare and add to the fact that before major junior he hadn't really put up good numbers anywhere. That and he was one of the older kids in the draft so I believe some people believed that may have already plateaued a bit.

You have to remember that even in his draft year the points he put up weren't all that surprising, its the Q, scoring always inflated in that league.

He really came on in the playoffs scoring 6 times in 10 games which likely earned him a bit more attention. Even post draft he's not really talked about much as he wasn't part of the Team Canada prospect hype train.

Another shg for Poirier tonight . Exciting to see he can play in all situations. Here are some of his stats from the Q to date this year.
League rank in parentheses: Goals 32 (7), Points 66 (8), Shg 7 (tied for 1st), sh points 9 (1), gwg 7 (3), First goal 7 (tied for 1st), Insurance goal 4 (tied for 1st), PIM 105 (12th), +/- +20 (18) .

Of his 32 goals only 5 have come on the pp. Whereas the 6 players ahead of him in goals have all scored at least 10 pp goals, with Plante, Mantha and Verrier scoring 19, 17 and 16 respectively.

Poirier can do it all and is a very promising well rounded prospect!

Watching him play, I believe he is our best prospec. Better than Sven, granlund, Reinhart, Gilles, or Gaudreau.

What makes Poirier so special is that he can do eveything at top speed. A lot of other quick players don't have the hands or the shot; they have to slow it down to make the move or take the shot. Poirer does not. He's intense.

I wonder if he makes the team out of camp next year.

Lets not get carried away. three of those are playing pro hockey against men, one is the best goalie in the NCAA and the little guy can certainly do things at high speed, infact he's doing things not seen in the NCAA in about 20 years.

Not my intention to pick on the guy, but Lombardi was really a marginal player with low-average to average hockey IQ. Didn't think the game exceptionally well, had a below average shot (no slapshot to speak about), and unremarkable passing. His straight line speed and skating were exceptional, but his hands did not keep up.

Emile appears to have a much better toolset, and if he followed in Lombardi's footsteps it would be a regression.

Lombo was also had the makings of a very good player from 2007-2009 on the Flames. I get that we're excited about having an abundance of higher first round picks, but we have to be realistic here. Having franchise players going past the top 10 (ex. Jarome Iginla going at #11) is an astronomical anomaly.

Best case scenario, he's a first line elite winger. At worst, he bottoms out as a third line grinder with wheels. However lets reign in expectations until he actually plays a game in the NHL.
