These weren't backdoor tap-ins on the rush here (and even there, for instance McDavid's first goal - NHL starters DO make those saves!). Even the deflections were both stoppable - you see elite goalies stop deflections all the time. Was the Puljujarvi goal a great shot? Sure. It was also perfectly stoppable, it wasn't screened or deflected.

The bar for Markstrom seems to be "don't be bad" instead of "be good".

I suspect Markstrom getting off with a free pass for being the 2nd best goaltender on the ice is gonna be a theme this year.

The first goal where it deflected to McDavid was stoppable? In what world?

Interesting game, I thought Mangiapane was the best flame of the night. Really liked the line

Kylington had 3:26 of ice time, he was caught a couple times and that was it.

Flames had lots of shots, but not a tonne of scoring chances.

Kylington seems wasted on defence. He appears to have enough skill to be a pretty good forward. The Flames have too many guys on the roster that don’t belong in the NHL anymore. Kylington would probably be better than at least 3

Just because a goalie can stop a deflection doesn't mean he should be expected to all the time.

Deflections are one of the last type of goals that a goalie should be blamed for and criticizing any goalie for not being able to stop one is ridiculous. But that seems to have become the norm around here since Kipper retired unless your name was David Rittich.

McDavid scores two points a game so I don't think many goalies are stopping him... especially on the PP.

Markstrom was beaten clean once so I will give you that one

Thought there was a glaring hole on the ice that had previously been filled by Mark Giordano. Not sure we have a player that is capable of filling that leadership void. I don't think Tanev is that guy. Tkachuk might be.

Gio's presence was missed I think

Well, Giordano will be missed, no doubt.

But I didn't see a lack of leadership last night. Not at all.

Yeah, Ceci was actually activating and Dube was behind the play after going for a skate in the o zone .

Tanev was behind as well, so it was becoming a 2 on 1 and Zadorov went for the pass as Puljujarvi blasted by

Generally a mess

It seems more than a few posters believe they were both Zadorov's man.

No he wasn't, he was in position. He just misjudged Puljujarvi's speed, and turned too late.

Tkachuk and leadership shouldn't be uttered in same sentence. He was selfish last night with a few blind passes and between the leg plays. He is not someone who should be leading this team.

He knows how to talk into a mic though.

Over the last couple years Markstrom rarely seems to play bad. I just wish he had more of that big save in him in big moments. That Pulijarvi goal was a nice shot, but a great save there would have been massive. Lots of nights I look back and think, Markstrom played good…but he gave up 3 or 4. Wish there was more of, he played great and gave up 1 or 2.

Meh. He was at the Center line across the rink by Backs as Ceci was crossing the blue line

Behind on the play on the whole

Surprised to see Lewis pretty down in the advanced metrics. I thought he generally looked good, and seemed to attack the net on a few occasions.

What was the deal with him crosschecking Derek Ryan after the game ended?

Is there some kind of history there?

Missed it. Did Ryan flip a puck at him? That really gets to him

Hah. No nothing. He was just skating by.

Kind of weird that he crosschecked a former teammate of three seasons like that. I get it if it was during the game, where friends are enemies, but seems odd after the game is over.

Is he allowed to do behind the back passes that result in 1 of the two goals and get 8 shots on net?

This take seems pretty ridiculous, he is a skilled player...let him be creative

This is why we can't have nice things, all the Flames leading scorers are constantly trashed by fans, its unlike any other team I follow.
