This.

If Flames can't go 55 games without a Monahan/Eichel and be in contention for a playoff spot, then this team isn't good enough or deep enough for anything to begin with.

I don’t think so but I do think there are teams that would be interested in Monahan that would send futures and cap dumps to Buffalo. In a way I see him as Kyle Turris in the Duchene deal. He was a valuable piece to Nashville and they were able to send the Avs what they wanted in Girard+2nd.

I think the Flames need a third team to make the Eichel deal work

Unless, maybe they think Dube can fill in at C until Eichel returns?

Lindholm
Backlund
Dube
Gawdin/Richardson

Hmm, maybe that would be the plan?
Sutter did say in the pre-season that Dube will definitely be at center this year. The way it was said, knowing how Sutter speaks and gives info. It sure seemed to be a foreshadowing IMO.

I would still be sad to see Monahan go. Incidentally, happy birthday Monahan!

We are officially in the Endgame now where the Flames have been seriously linked to the player so it is either getting him which may result in the bump of the long dormant “Brad Fricken Treliving” thread or the crushing feeling of him going elsewhere which surely will bump the “Treliving must go” thread
Well put, sir.

You'd better hope there isn't.

With all this talk about Calgary making a competitive pitch, it reminded me of this post from July 30 on HF by a fan who said they had a source.

Dunno. I've heard from a source of mine that Calgary has something tabled with Buffalo, but it's sort of just a waiting game to see if it comes down across the board. I assume Buffalo wants 5 pieces from Calgary right now because there's no home run player (which again, I doubt they get), once the ask moves down a bit, this could be a possibility.
If true this has been one hell of a waiting game. I didn’t think there was anything to this when I read it back then, but if true its just another piece of info that kind of aligns with what Marek and Friedman have said recently about the Flames really trying and having a competitive offer.

Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman

Probably in the minority but I think the Flames could manage with that top 6. Backlund is ideally suited for the 3rd line but I think his style of game meshes nicely with Mangiapane and Coleman and it would be an effective 2nd line for half a season.
I’ve also liked what I’ve seen from Dube at center, and would be okay with him centering the 3rd line. And Sutter did say it would eventually happen this season…

I don't think losing Monahan and Eichel not coming in until February-March would sewer the season and I think mgmt and coaching are wise enough to see the same thing.

We are in a division with the western Canadian blue lines, an expansion team, tanking Arizona and the California clubs. We would still be firmly in the hunt if we traded Tkachuk too at this point.

I don't think the subtle tries of Dube at center where he looked good are any coincidence.

Ah yes.. the good old Backlund should be on the 3rd line statement. Hes one of the best 5v5 centers and is an upper tier 2nd line c. Even if he was on the "3rd" line he would still be an 18 minute a night guy.

Backlund is the "sneakiest" of good centers.

Elsewhere he might have a much bigger reputation league wide.

Nice find with the HF quote I did not see that until today. I agree with you regarding that top 6. The bottom 6 is where it gets a little scary but ultimately it needs to be 2-1 type games until Eichel would be ready and a deadly top 6 can be unleashed along with a bolstered bottom 6 that would include Backlund.

Wow, tons of buzz around the Flames on Twitter.

Pretty much all the hockey rumour sites now listing them as the top suitor or a one of the last remaining candidates with Anaheim.

Hoping this is a "where there's smoke" scenario.

I've got wizard gifs I've been itching to use for two years. Let's go Tree man!

Remember when Pierre Luc Dubois was the Holy Grail around here, then he went to Winnipeg and scored 20 points in 41 games.

They can send Middlestadt or Cozens too to fill the center spot until Eichel is healthy.

There are also numerous reasons he wouldn't do it.
BUufalo is not a place to build up stats. Who would feed him the puck?

Injured Eichel had 18 points in 21 Buffalo games last season
