With the audio mix so bad these days, and actors increasingly mumbling their dialogue in a ‘naturalistic’ manner, I often turn on subtitles even for english-language shows. And I’m not alone.

I like to use my big surround sound setup so I crank it up to where I can easily hear dialogue. I don't like subtitles because now my eyes have 2 jobs. I feel like I miss out on some of the visuals and atmosphere because I'm reading the whole time.

That said, Shogun seems pretty good so far.

Another MUST watch, and absolute fave. Apparently they have a third season written, but has to go through channels and approvals.

Ken Watanabe is also one of my fave actors. But the casting of everybody is really great. I love Ishida and Sato.

I've opted to turn my TV up to obnoxious levels instead.

Shogun might be the most compelling show I’ve ever watched. Maybe Band of Brothers and the first seasons of GoT and Westworld come close. Am fascinated with the story and culture with superb cinematography, action, and acting.

The subtitles are intimidating but essential to the experience given the importance of the language barrier and unreliable translation to the story.

Shogun is tip freakin top TV.
Outstanding casting. They absolutely nailed the ice cold tension between Mariko and Buntaro.

Streaming services really need to update the subtitle system with how people use turn nowadays. There should be multiple levels of subtitles available, I only want dialogue, I don't need music subs, noise subs etc.

Sometimes those are important. Though captions over something that is already subtitled is annoying, where the dialogue is transcribed in English by the show, but captions sometimes appear showing, “speaking in foreign language” and blocking the actual subtitles.

Sure which is why subtitle options should be vastly more dynamic

Sometimes shows have moments, and you have to tip your cap.

Skip to 28 minutes to see one of the best task executions ever by Joanne McNally (she's the blonde lady). Kudos to her.

Finished ep8 last night, it's very good but not quite extremely good like GOT which some people were saying. It stalls a little too long in some episodes but I'm intrigued with the story.

Hiroyuki Sanada is great as always and the beautiful Anna Sawai is becoming a very accomplished top actress in a short time.

I'm perplexed by the ratings, to be honest. Here and elsewhere. To say "it stalls a little too long" is incredibly kind. What has happened?
It is an intriguing story. Costumes are fabulous, cinematography as well. I keep thinking something is about to happen, then it doesn't. Unless you count an earthquake as something, or bashing your head on a rock. They just talk endlessly, unfortunately. I really want to see what these other people do..

That would be great. But I do admire the dedication of subtitle authors when they include stuff like <frustrated mumbling> and <eerie discordant piano> and <alarmed shouts in distance>. You can tell they take pride in their craft and aren’t just mailing it in.

That's closed captioning for deaf people. Subtitles are just the words. Sometimes you can select one or the other.

Why do they get the better subtitles? This is discrimination of the highest order! I demand justice!
