I thought the opening episode was actually really good.
It's so unnerving to see the shots of civilization functioning normally while you get glimpses of the horror that is all around them.
I was genuinely creeped out several times during the episode.

Someone else mentioned that and it actually makes a fair bit of sense. Also that school that the mother works at appears to be for troubled teens of sorts (likely a drug use area) and the principal mentioned numerous people phoning in sick.
Or possibly it spread through shared needles?

The restaurant that junkie and Calvin meet in is totally the one from Pulp Fiction that gets held up.

I almost started fast-forwarding because I thought they had gone to a commercial break and were running a promo for Pulp Fiction.

Not bad but I really don't like the lead actress - in pretty much anything she does.
Hopefully she bites it.

I was thinking that when I watched the episode, but I never thought to compare it.

I can't believe I didn't recognize her from House of Cards, which is only 1 of 3 shows I'm watching right now.

I thought Kim Dickens was awesome as Joanie Stubbs in Deadwood.

Holy crap! I recognized her from Sons of Anarchy, but not House of Cards.
When the daughter came on screen, I called her The Commander (from The 100). Which got lots of laughs from nobody else in the room, because I was alone . . . but *I* thought it was funny.

Funny - I liked her more than most anyone else in the episode. Was looking forward to the guy from Whale Rider but he hasn't had much to work with yet. Looks like he will be a main character but of course you never know.
Hoping for a little more tonight.

Solid episode, really picking up the pace.
Thing I don't get is the apparent reluctance to share info, especially with the daughter?

That seems to be a theme in the original as well. For example Rick not telling what Jenner told him. Maybe it just sounds so crazy that it's hard to put into words.

"What do you know? What have you seen?"
"I've seen what the people do. What they...don't do. It doesn't make sense. They don't die, Liza. They...come back. We have to get far away from what's outside. All of us. I can't be more specific, because we have to stretch this out for as many of the first 13 episodes as we can."
"Mom, what's going on?"
"Alicia, can't you hear the musical number ending the episode? I'll tell you in an emotionally charged scene some time in the future!"
I wouldn't last very long in a doomsday scenario, I don't think. I'd be in the first wave to go down.

As expected, much better episode tonight as they built up the characters in the first episode. Really started to feel the pace this episode. Did I hear right? Next episode in TWO weeks? WTF? You get us into this and you take a week break?

Next week is Labour Day. They probably thought it was better to take a week off than it is to have a bunch of people miss the episode because they're away from a tv.

That was pretty good. Pacing was a little better and more sense of overall dread. Starting to feel invested in the characters and I see potential for drama with Travis' old and new family.
Pet peeve after living in LA for a couple of years. The characters had no problem driving from location to location. I have seen horrible traffic in LA on Christmas Day even. Driving can take forever. That used to really drive me crazy about the show 24. Jack never had a problem driving from place to place. Willing suspension of disbelief I guess.

That and a show about people stuck in traffic would be awfully boring.
