What hate? As far as I can tell, just about everyone in this thread enjoyed the film (so far at least). We might want to take special note of this, because I honestly haven't seen this much consensus on a Star Wars film since Empire Strikes Back. This is pretty astonishing actually.

I meant mostly away from CP. I actually hasn't opened this thread before my response, but I mean if I look at my Facebook feed or god forbid RottenTomatoes' top critics, it's 50/50 at best.

It was gritty, it was rough around the edges, you see what kinda made Han the salty guy he was when he was older.

There was no saving the universe, just small scale adventure.

That movie was awesome.

I don't see how it could have been done any better.

I went and read some of the Rotten Tomatoes fan reviews. Sheesh.

It really gives a platform to the kooks out there. There are multi-paragraph rants there where guys are just losing their minds about the "SJWs" and Disney owning Lucasfilms.

They are still ranting about The Last Jedi in their Solo reviews.

The first scene Lando is in when you hear him a second before you see him. It actually made me laugh how spot on Donald Glover was.

$83mil on the three day for it. Might not break $100mil on the 4 day, which is very bad for this level of release. Might put the brakes on those Boba Fett and Obi-Wan movies they're thinking of.

I wonder if Star Wars rethinks releasing solo movies like Bobba Fett and just sticks to ensamble movies. The 4 day estimate is now at 101 mill while The Last Jedi made 104 mill on its opening day. World Wide it's even worse at 65 mill for the weekend. Does episode 9 cross a billion? I'm not sure given the OG characters won't be in it.

I wonder if fans of the movie will come out in the coming weeks to give more support, like fans of JL who were able to get that film to over $600 mill WW.

The Last Jedi didn't have to compete with Deadpool and the Avengers. Not sure what Disney was thinking by opening this movie against those two juggernauts. They should have waited until the fall or even Christmas.

Wow. Domestically this thing is not even going to do half the business of Rogue One. That would be fine if you were doing a smaller film but rumor is Solo had a price tag of over $300 million before Marketing.

The Star Wars universe has great appeal so time to start creating new stories. That was part of the appeal of Rogue One. The back story element was really just a minor point, and many younger viewers didn't really even know about it. New stores about new characters won't have the burden of huge expectations either.

Will be very interesting the see what kind of business the last chapter in the trilogy does.

i think that the days of Hollywood just expanding universes and expecting fans to jump on board are waning.... with the exception of Marvel, it seems like others haven't been doing so well...

DC and SW spinoffs or expanded universes haven't done so well.

WRT to Solo, there were some production troubles, with the original directors getting fired over halfway through the shooting before Howard came on board to finish it and ending up with a number of reshoots....and then the marketing campaign started out as having a serious tone, only to switch to irreverent a couple of weeks before the release.

it takes a lot to sell a movie that people aren't necessarily clamoring for... the ant man sequel will be interesting to follow if just for that.

You can put me in the group that saw TFA, R1, and TLJ in the theater within a week of release but won't be going to see Solo. It is a combination of me not liking R1 and being skeptical of these stand alone prequels, my wife not liking TLJ and suffering Star Wars fatigue, and not having much time to see movies so prioritising Avengers and Deadpool.

Based on the good reviews I'll definitely be renting as soon as I can though.

I find this surprising because his "NY black thug" accent in Spiderman was so bad that it was all I could think about when he was on screen.

it was ok...pretty ok. it's tough to think of Star Wars movies as less than cultural events, but I guess it's just going to have to be like other big franchises, where you kind of pick and choose what you feel like, but most of it isn't "must see" stuff.

my favorite parts were character moments of course, I wish there was more stuff on the ground. the shaky frantic CGI blur of the space chase did nothing for me unfortunately. in fact, a lot of that shaky camerawork made its way into simple dialogue scenes. when it was just Qi'ra talking to Han while trying on clothes, the camera guy was standing over his shoulder jittering around like he had 5 cups of coffee. why? was that Ron Howard or the other guys that got fired?

Ehrenreich put a good effort in, but that higher voice of his just ensured I'd never believe he was a young Han, no matter how much he put his hands on his belt while walking around. I got excited when Glover did a spot on Lando with his first couple of lines, but that smooth smarmy drawl just went away right after.

Spoiler!

First half boring and slow. Game of Thrones Emilia Clarke distracting since I’m a big GoT guy. Train chase went on too long.

Lando excellent. Second half way more fun. Ending could not have been more predictable “curse your inevitable betrayal(s)”.

Overall the reviews seem spot on to me. Wish they would have pushed the envelope a bit more.

6/10

(for the record I disliked Rogue 1 and loved Last Jedi)

Spoiler!

Well I guess I'll go see it then. Despite not knowing any of you, you are more trustworthy in my book compared to RT reviewers.

I kinda hope the movie tanks at the box office. Hopefully the message will be sent to Micky that fans are PISSED OFF about The last Jedi and they need to do a better job with the Saga films. The anthology films directors can have all the creative license they want, but do not mess with what is sacred.

Really awful numbers, and the foreign numbers are even worse than the domestic. I'm assuming some haven't been counted yet, but so far Solo is running at under 2/3 foreign to domestic ratio.

I'm a little bit baffled at why Disney wouldn't decide to push this movie back towards the holidays. It seems like the natural choice, if you have a movie with somewhat major production problems.

Solo really failed to find an audience. I can see why. It's basically a backstory-type movie that only people who are invested fans are going to be overly interested in. The problem is that the movie seems more geared towards casual fans and families. While only the hardcore fan is going to care about how Solo got his blaster, the movie isn't especially directed at them.

These prequel/origin movies also rarely do well. Just going through this list of prequels and none of them are especially good:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_prequels

Anyways, I really hope this encourages Disney to make some changes from the TLJ. I also hope this encourages them to be a bit more creative with the franchise and tell stories outside of the OT sandbox.

Film is estimated to take in $101 million over the 4-day weekend. Disney better hope the movie has legs.
