Weird, I thought all the providers hate this plan.
I took a look and I'll wait until December to see what pick and pay looks like. They also usually send me a promo deal once a year to get their larger package for $30/month for 6 months.

I ended up switching to Telus as I saved $80 a month. I will miss the faster internet (120 vs 100) I am sure but I couldn't justify the price difference.
The kicker is I purchased 3 portals and the gateway last year so now I have gear collecting dust.

Just chatted with Shaw online on behalf of my father, as switching to Limited + SN + TSN would save him $12/month compared to Personal + Sports1 that he currently has. The agent was appalled that I would be losing over half of the TV content (that my Dad doesn't watch), and said I was much better off and got better value with the current package, especially if my Dad likes sports! My proposed package would keep all of the same sports channels, and only lose 7 HD channels that he rarely watches (HGTV, Food, YTV, Muchmusic, History). The two channels he might miss are CBC Newsworld and Frame.
The kicker, though, is that he gets a $5 credit on the current plan that is equivalent to his rental fee for two boxes (1 SD, 1 HD) that he rents from Shaw. With the proposed changes, that credit would no longer apply. So the savings would shrink to $7/month.
Probably not going to change things at this point.

Just spoke with an online Shaw rep and changed my TV internet package. Currently I just have the base package with the TSN/Sportsnet addons, and Internet 50. Moving to the basic package + TSN/Sportsnet + Internet 60 gives me slightly faster internet and saves me $15/mo. So far these CRTC mandated changes are looking pretty good

We had Shaw 30 Internet and a home phone.
Shaw called me and offered me personal tv, plus one extra package, plus free hdpvr rental, plus NHL game centre for the rest of the season, for only $5 more per month than I was paying (for 6 months). We took the offer, and may very well cancel the tv again in 6 months.

I see on the Shaw website they've had the basic cable package at $25 dollars for a while.
Does anyone know if the additional tv packages will change? They still are 5 or 6 channel packs and no individual channel selections advertised.

just cancelled my cable tv from Shaw. While I was on the line I said I was planning on cancelling internet as well and switching to Teksavvy ($45 for Internet 30, but they have an install fee and I'd need to buy a modem).
I got offered $55 a month for internet for 3 months (instead of $73). I took it.
Will either call again in 3 months or (hopefully) we will have moved by then and we will likely switch completely to Teksavvy at that point.

I think the a la carte/individual channel selection mandated by the CRTC does not have to come into place until Dec I think. Basic pkg ($25 one) has to be in place everywhere by March 1st. So I'm not sure if we'll see much movement in that regard for a while...

Yup end of the year you can buy channel one by one. Likely themed packages will be a better deal. We wait and see.

I spoke to Shaw the other night and they said the channels will have to be pick and pay by the end of the year. Until then you can only get a few individual channels. Sounds like they won't be changing anything until December (when they have to)

Yeah no point getting TS if you are going to move anyway.

I think shaw and telus have also implemented an installation fee as well... Switching around isn't so beneficial anymore

The install fee is often waived to entice people to sign with them.

Shaw has been giving me free installs when signing up month to month. Telus on the other hand wanted to charge me $100+.

Any other reason you switched to Telus, other than the $80 savings? I just saw something that might make me switch to Telus as well.
I'm currently on the 60mb/s plan with Shaw, which is $93 for the standalone service.
Telus is now $93 for their 100mb/s standalone price, and I like how they have the unlimited data add-on as well.
They must have just updated this pricing, I was looking at this a couple weeks ago, and I'm almost certain this wasn't the case then.

To be honest Telus missed the install date so I called shaw to extend a few days and they offered me popular tv, telephone and 120 Internet for $143 a month so that was the exact same price as Telus. I called Telus back and cancelled the setup. Worked in my favour that they skipped the install I guess.

I'm really curious what are you guys are doing that you require 100 or 120mb/s? Do you really need your porn in seconds, instead of minutes? Is it 4k content?

From what I've read 4k requires 25Mbps which is right on my speed with Shaw. It would be nice to have double that but it's not offered here.

Netflix, CraveTV, software updates (have about ~25 different VPSs, systems and devices), GeForce now(~50Mb/sec), streaming from my media server to hotels if I'm on the road, VPN traffic to customers and work, VOIP calls, Webex, plus normal browsing/email/ect.
Individually everything except GeForce Now takes only a few Mb; however in aggregate they can gobble up a lot of bandwidth. The 6Mb/s upload was actually a huge bottle neck for me; however the new 10Mb/s has lessened that bottle neck.
