Default Associate vs. Assistant

So I was reading the TSN article about Keenan being the new Flames HC. They mentioned that Playfair was an assistant coach with the Flames before the last season and now he will stay on as an associate coach.

What is the difference???

Does anyone know?

That thread doesn't explain the difference between an associate coach and an assistant coach

It's like the difference between "Sales Associate" and "flunky" in real life.

Make no mistake, Iron Mike is Large and In Charge.

They've talked about that on the Fan.

The associate is a step above assistant but below Head coach. It sort of sets up a chain of command.

Sounds like a wonderful euphemism.

Sorry, discussed a bit here:

I think it means he still gets paid as a head coach.

i think it might just be the term they use for being the top assistant.. Keenan said Darrly was his associate in Chicago... and considering Iron Mike said that he would discuss the assistant coaching positions with Playfair i think its a safe bet Jimmy still has some influence

Same pay, less work. Hella a good deal for Jimmy.

The biggest practical difference seems to be this: If the head coach gets canned during the season, the associate coach is first in the line of succession. Apart from that, associate, compared to assistant, is about like one extra stripe on a sergeant's sleeve.

Sometimes when there is a coach/GM, like Sutter was a few years ago, and that guy can't be around all the time, they designate one of the assistants instead with the title associate coach - which means when the head man isn't around, the associate is in charge.

Who is Darrly? His wife? His dog?

I think if all goes well in 2007-08, nobody will be able to differentiate associate coach from assistant coach.

For a second I thought we'd just hired Mike Keenan again!
