As it was set in the days leading up to “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” was packed with cameos from familiar characters — including Princess Leia. But Leia’s cameo at the end of the film may have caused people to scratch their heads. After all, earlier in the film, Leia’s father Bail Organa dispatched her to Tatooine to pick up Obi-Wan Kenobi. If she was on her way to that Outer Rim planet, then how did she (and the spaceship Tantive IV) end up at the battle of Scarif in the film’s final act?
|
Quote:
“The plan was always that Leia was going to go to Tatooine to pick up Obi-Wan and [Rebel Admiral] Raddus was going to escort her,” said Pablo Hidalgo. “Then the news of Scarif came in, and that was deemed more important … [because] it’s the one warship that they have at this point.” Since the Tantive IV was aboard Raddus’ Mon Calamari warship, it went along for the ride. The novelization of “Rogue One” also points out that the Tantive IV was docked in Raddus’ warship because it was undergoing repairs.

I finally saw this last night and I pretty much loved it. When I found out long ago that Darth Vader was in it, I was kinda disappointed, hoping they would just make something to stand on its own. However, that last scene pretty much gave me an erection. The droid was fantastic.
Top 3 Star Wars movie for me. Not having the iconic crawl was off-putting though.

I thought that at first. Then the next couple of times I saw it, it made sense why they didn't do it since they wanted it to be a stand alone movie.

It wasnt a Star Wars movie, it was a Star Wars Story. Important distinction.

Yeah but really it was a Star Wars movie. I get the reasoning, I just think it still should have had the crawl. Or at least the music.

Oh I agree, but at some point if they want to be releasing 2-3 of these a year they're going to have to do some paradigm shifting to prevent over-use.

Well its kind of the dilemma isnt it?
Star Wars is hugely nostalgic, the crawl, the characters, the music, etc.
And thats perfectly fine in limited quantities but at some point the 'New' Star Wars, Disney's Star Wars, is going to have to stop relying on that and milking it and start bringing something of their own to the table.
Otherwise, long-term, this isnt going to be viable.

I dunno, I think the music and the crawl are iconic, but over in 2 minutes. They still need to deliver a movie. It's just "branding" really. Unnecessary yes, doesn't change the movie, I just would have preferred it.
I think that Rogue One was a great opener to the EU, but the real test is when they're not going to be able to lean on the low hanging fruit of Star Wars. When they can't put Vader or a Skywalker in it, or the Death Star.
Give me Boba Fett Adventures.

I will say I was rather surprised when the movie started, the music was different and then....the movie starts, no crawl.

I will be pissed if there is a 4th GD deathstar. It would probably be enough to turn me off the franchise.

Yeah, I actually turned to my friend and we both commented on the lack of music or crawl. We then giggled and high fived. Then I turned to the lady sitting beside me and headbutt her in the bridge of the nose, because screw you lady.

You and I have very different film-going philosophies.

Although the Star Wars opening crawl is iconic, isn't it considered bad screen writing to open your film with a bunch of exposition the viewer is forced to read? I had no issue removing this from Rougue One.

I would be surprised if that was the plan -- one a year is plenty. 2-3 Star Wars movies a year and people will just stop caring pretty quickly.

I think the 'no crawl' thing works pretty well. Two types of people will see this movie:
1. Those who've never seen a Star Wars movie before and obviously won't be expecting the crawl
2. Those that have seen the movies (Ep IV at least) and can get a little kick out of the opening crawl for Ep IV being the actual plot of R1. That was one of the neater touches of the movie for me.
Overall I thought the movie was excellent, apart from the general confusing nature of the first 40 minutes or so. I imagine that it would be even better to watch a 2nd time.

Personally, I can't wait for the DVD because I'll probably rewatch the Vader scene about 25 times the first time I watch it.
