Seriously, the last 3 drafts (15-17) have been home runs for us.
They look good, but let's not get too far ahead of ourselves before any of them are actually playing on the team.

Am I? Or does management have good faith in these guys? I guarantee if these 4 weren't doing as good, we wouldn't have traded our 2018 pick.

Definitely a reach to believe all four will make the NHL. I think they're good prospects but that is a very unlikely scenario.

Then again I would love the Flames to become Anaheim 2.0 and churn out a half dozen quality D in a relatively short period.

There's a reason why we have 3 defenseman that have contracts ending in 3 years... I think that will be the year when we evaluate who is ready to take the next step and who isn't.

Valimaki scored his first WHL hat trick tonight. Americans lead 6-1. Game in 3rd period. He is +4 so far.

32gp 11g 21a 32pts +16.

Not bad for an injury filled season.

edit: apparently it is his 2nd WHL hat trick

With Valimaki looking so good where do you think he would get picked in a 2017 re-draft?

2017 draft picks from Hockeydb

If the Flames don't trade a d-man (Brodie) what forward from this draft would be equal value?

THN has Valimaki ranked ahead of Juolevi in the latest future watch. Seems so far like a pretty astute pick by the Flames.

I'm not sure which forward from this draft would be equal value, but I can tell you one that is certainly a lot less value: Kailer Yamamoto.

Why?

Where would Yamamoto rank in the Flames forward prospects?

Dube 2016 draft and Phillips 2016 draft that appear to be a top Flames forward prospect had the same ppg as Yamamoto.

In their 2017-18 NHL games Yamamoto appeared closer to NHL level than Mangipane.

Agree that it was a good pick for the Flames.

Using Juolevi as a comparison is a very low bar.

After we drafted him I compared his PPG numbers to other 1st round defenceman out of the CHL, and it looked like Provorov was a great comparison:
Spoiler!

Identical 61 pts in 60 games draft year seasons in the WHL.

Provorov then put up 73 in 62 games, and 13 in 21 playoff games his draft+1 season (1.04 PPG over the whole season).

Valimaki's draft+1 season consisted of 45 pts in 43 games after coming back from injury, and 17 pts in 12 playoff games (1.13 PPG over the whole season).

In the re-draft players moving more than 10 spots:

8. Eeli Tolvanen, RW (taken 30th by Nashville)
9. Robert Thomas, C (taken 20th by St. Louis)
18. Conor Timmins, D (taken 32nd by Colorado)
19. Michael Rasmussen, C (taken 9th by Detroit)
26. Drake Batherson, C (taken 121st by Ottawa)
29. Cal Foote, D (taken 14th by Tampa Bay)
32. Dylan Samberg, D (taken 43rd by Winnipeg)
33. Alex Formenton, LW (taken 47th by Ottawa)
35. Jonathan Davidsson, RW (taken 170th by Columbus)
36. Ian Mitchell, D (taken 57th by Chicago)

I guess that there is more than a stats line to the rankings:

Cal Foote 70 pts in 60 games +31
Dylan Samberg 13 pts in 42 +5 games with U. of Minnesota-Duluth a lot of credit given to a shut-down D-man for his team winning the Frozen 4.

That's quite the rise on Batherson. 77 points in 51 games and leading the playoffs in scoring with 29 points in 19 games is nothing to scoff at, but Alain (87 points in 65 games) and Barre-Boulet (116 points in 65 games) are also scoring like crazy. That trio are 20-21 year olds.

For a player that went undrafted in 2016, to a fourth round in 2017 and now would be a first rounder in a redraft?

Formenton up from 47 to 33 as well. Ottawa scouts must be pleased.

Yeah, I don't get this. How often has a player been passed over in his draft-eligible year to then be selected in the first round a year later? I can't imagine this has ever happened before.

Probably some Sens fans working at the THN there.
