Post Quarter Season - Player Grades / Projected Stats

Here's my collection of projected stats for our guys along with my grades for them.. Sorted in order of points so far. I'll update after tonights game so it's a true "quarter" mark as well.

Johnny Gaudreau: 20GP, 10G, 21A = 31 points
Projected: 82GP, 41G, 86A = 127 pts

Grade: A+
What a resurgence! Actually playing some good defense as well,
and is back to his dipsy doodling self that we all love. How good can he get?

Sean Monahan: 20GP, 12G, 10A = 22 points
Projected: 82GP, 49G, 41A = 90 pts

Grade: A
One of his best starts to a season, scoring goals in his usual boring
manner. Highest Plus/Minus on the team as well.

T.J. Brodie: 20GP, 2G, 12A = 14 points
Projected: 82GP, 8G, 49A = 57 pts

Grade: C-
What an enigma this year. Sometimes excellent offensively and driving the play, sometimes a train wreck in the defensive zone. No consistency this year, never know what you're going to get with him this year.

Matthew Tkachuk: 18GP, 4G, 11A = 15 points
Projected: 81GP, 17G, 47A = 64 pts

Grade: A-
Pretty decent start for him, no sophomore slump and continuing to
agitate everyone. Wouldn't mind a few more goals.

Micheal Ferland: 18GP, 8G, 4A = 12 points
Projected: 81GP, 34G, 17A = 51 pts

Grade: A-
This guy was our leading scorer for a bit on pace for 36 goals! I think we can all agree he has exceeded expectations so far this year. The minus there is for the slow start and his usual consistency issues but overall I've been impressed.

Mikael Backlund: 20GP, 5G, 9A = 14 points
Projected: 82GP, 21G, 37A = 58 pts

Grade: B+
Having a good season, his usual self, the 3M line driving play etc. Doesn't
seem to be quite packing the same punch as last year though. And especially
with regards to the PK, he's one of our main PK guys, so have to drop him a bit here.

Michael Frolik: 20GP, 4G, 5A = 9 points
Projected: 82GP, 16G, 21A = 37 pts
Grade: B
Part of the 3M line so fine there. But I'm feeling slightly disappointed with him this year. Doesn't seem like he's shooting much or making many great plays. Not standing out really.

Dougie Hamilton: 19GP, 2G, 8A = 10 points
Projected: 82GP, 8G, 33A = 41 pts
Grade: C+
Great Corsi guy with Gio, but I really miss his accurate wrist shot. Seems to be
jumping into the play a little more lately, but hasn't resulted in much yet.

Kris Versteeg: 20GP, 3G, 5A = 8 points
Projected: 82GP, 12G, 21A = 33 pts
Grade: D+
Seems disinterested and lazy this year. Giving pucks away left and right, looks
slow, has played terrible on the Powerplay. (Get him outta there NOW), has played terrible 5 on 5, no chemistry etc. He's approaching whipping boy status for me, hope he picks it up, but I'm personally hoping he's gone next year and bring up a young guy.

Mark Giordano: 20GP, 3G, 5A = 8 points
Projected: 82GP, 12G, 21A = 33 pts
Grade: B-
Seems to be doing pretty well defensively, I miss his offense though. Hasn't
done much in that area this year. Doing well on Corsi front and driving play.

Jaromir Jagr: 11GP, 1G, 5A = 6 points
Projected: 73GP, 7G, 33A = 40 pts
Grade: B+
I like this guy so far, mostly for the mentoring. Has great hands in the O zone,
super slow but I'm glad we have him and I think he's going to produce more as
he continues to groove it in.

Mark Jankowski: 11GP, 3G, 1A = 4 points
Projected: 74GP, 20G, 7A = 27 pts
Grade: B+
On pace for 20 goals, I think we would all be really impressed if that happened. Seems to be defensively responsible, and helping his linemates come around.

Sam Bennett: 19GP, 1G, 2A = 3 points
Projected: 82GP, 4G, 9A = 13 pts
Grade: F
One of my favorite players but MAN. I really hope he gets it going. We are
starting to hear the bust word a lot and it makes me really sad.

Brett Kulak: 11GP, 0G, 3A = 3 points
Projected: 74GP, 0G, 20A = 20 pts
Grade: B+
This guy might be becoming a regular NHLer, really hoping so as I can't
stand Bartkowski and think Kulak is 100 times better. I like his breakouts,
just gotta get his shot through a little more.

Troy Brouwer: 19GP, 0G, 3A = 3 points
Projected: 82GP, 0G, 13A = 13 pts
Grade: D
The only reason this guy doesn't get an F is that he seems to have adjusted
to a 4th line role a little better. He seems to be hitting more and making
a few more plays. But he's on pace for ZERO goals. Man what an overpayment.

Travis Hamonic: 16GP, 1G, 1A = 2points
Projected: 79GP, 5G, 5A = 10 pts
Grade: C-
He's still in the Hamilton 50 game adjustment period so I'm giving him a
bit of a pass here. I think he will be way better, but so far, much more
giveaways then I thought he would have being a responsible defensive D.

Michael Stone: 19GP, 1G, 1A = 2points
Projected: 82GP, 4G, 4A = 8pts
Grade: B-
He's been fine, he's been what we've wanted him to be.

Curtis Lazar: 15GP, 0G, 2A = 2 points
Projected: 78GP, 0G, 10A = 10 pts
Grade: D
Energy guy, skates, doesn't do much else though. I really wanted
this guy to break through and it doesn't look like it is going to happen.

Matt Stajan: 13 GP, 0G, 0A = 0 points
Projected: 76GP, 0G, 0A = 0pts
Grade: F
Sorry, love ya Matt, but I think you might be done. You've been a warrior
but you just don't provide anything on the ice anymore that Jankowski doesn't.

Matt Bartkowski: 10 GP, 0G, 0A = 0 points
Projected: 73GP, 0G, 0A = 0 pts
Grade: F
I don't get what the coach sees in this guy. Can't wait till he's in the AHL
permanently but for now if he just sits in the box every game, then that is
a good spot for him.

Tanner Glass: 7GP, 0G, 0A = 0pts
Projected: 10GP (my projection), 0G, 0A = 0pts
Grade: C+
He's done all I've expected him to do which is not much. Hit things and won
a fight. Would much rather have Hathaway up in this role. Looks like management finally agreed with CP to send him down. They seem to be about 1 month behind our recommendations though, so that means we are going to have to endure Versteeg on the 1st line PP until Christmas or so.

Mike Smith: 17GP, 10-6, 2.61 GAA, .922 sv%
Grade: A-
Fading a litle bit recently but love this guys battle and complete and he
is one of the sole reasons we have a winning record, hope he can keep it up!

Eddie Lack:
Grade: D: 4GP, 1-2, 5.29 GAA, .813 sv%
Hasn't been given much of a chance but so far from what we've seen, not great.

Gulutzan:
C+, some good some bad, we have plenty of threads on this though.

Overall Flames: B-/C+, plenty of room for improvement but ok enough start for us to build on.

I give your ratings a D- but I'll give you a B for taking the time to actually do this.

Giordano seems low.

He's doing everything you could ask for defensively.

Before last night, in his previous games, he let in 4, 2(in 1 period before injury), 3, 5, 4.

So his A+ start had definitely come down. A- is very fair.

Updated guys with points from last night.
You know Johnny is playing well when he gets an assist and it doesn't change his projected assist totals.. I guess he is getting an assist every game from here on out.
Projected points now 127! Obviously that's not going to happen but 100 is a big time possibility I think.. Pretty exciting.

Also Monahan on pace for 90 points, how kick ass would that be.

I'm so glad BT signed Johnny & Mony to incredibly good $6M deals. If this was Edmonton, Drai already got $8.5M/year for a single good season -- it would probably be $10M+/year if Drai had Mony's multiple seasons of top-level scoring output.

Eric Francis agrees with you FBI...

BOLD PREDICTION: Flames will make the playoffs, but will fall short of the 100-point goal it set in the pre-season.

GRADE: B-minus

Agreed on Versteeg. Thankfully he's no longer in the top 9 because there's times where he just brings an entire line down with how slow he is and some of the boneheaded plays he makes. Nothing against the guy but there's definitely other players I'd like to see in his place. A Hathaway-Lazar-Brouwer line with Freddie cycling in and out would be ideal for me at this point but that obviously can't really happen right now.

Yeah I would definitely upgrade my C+ to B- after that game. That got me excited that that's the way we want to play, that's the way we can play. On the road against a good team no less. Now let's see if we can build some consistency or if we lose 6-0 next game.

True. But no real softies that deflated us. The fact that he is conceding so many goals has been out garbage ok and defence in those

Sean Monahan:

20gp, 12g - 10a - 22pts.

5 GWGs, OT goal

Plus 7

52.86 FO%

Still can't get an A+ grade from CPers.

I would give Brodie and Hamonic an F.

Worst plus/minus players on the team; worst penalty kill in the league.

The whole top line is A+ right now.

Ferland is playing well above expectations and can be our underpaid winger with two stars guy who pots 25-30 a year. Monahan couldn't be playing better right now. He reading the play and getting to spots.

I think you have to give Kulak an A. 20 points would be excellent from a 3rd pairing guy, especially a rookie, and he's doing pretty well defensively too. One of the big positive surprises of the season so far IMO.

This

I would also say that a team that's currently looking like it's going to comfortably make the playoffs (on pace for 98 points with a clear upward trend) deserves at least a B with no minus.

Wait, so you'll cut 25% of Gaudreau's projected point total off but just leave Monahan at 90? By the same prediction that puts Monahan around 72 points.

EDIT: FBI took away 20% of Gaudreau's projected total, not 25%. I am bad at math.

Some random stat picks. (All stats among players with at least 10 GP.)

- Tkachuk is 1st in the league in drawn penalties. (16, next Flame is Gaudreau with 9.)
- Backlund is tied for 2nd league in takeaways.
- Smith is 4th in league in 5v5 SV%.
- Monahan is tied for 1st in GWG (with Brandon Saad).
- Bennett is 15th in league in minor penalties per 60 minutes. Stajan is 25th.

- Ferland leads the team with 40 hits. Next guys have 31 or below, and for additional context the other top guys are bottom 6 guys or defenseman.
- Versteeg has by far the best FO% in the team with 60.3% (For context he's 6th in team in faceoffs taken.) Next we have Bennett, Stajan and Monahan around 53%, the rest are all below 50%. Versteegs PP FOW% is 76.9. Maybe that's one reason they like him on the PP? (There's got to be SOME reason.)
- Giordano leads the team in blocked shots by a lot. (47 blocks, next is Stone with 32.)
- Guys over 50% in SAT% (AKA "positive corsi"): all top 6 forwards, Giordano-Hamilton, Jagr, Kulak.
