Default Doping at Tokyo?

I’ve watched more of these games than I thought I would, mainly because I thought the time zones would make me miss a lot more than I did. I haven’t seen a lot of doping violation stories, and that makes me wonder what’s happening? Are athletes and their doctors that much ahead now? There’s no way that everyone has just decided to be clean, right?

Anyway…here’s one of the first I’ve seen and honestly some pretty glaring red flags. When people suddenly drop times and say “we’ll I guess we just worked hard” it falls pretty flat for me. Every opponent of theirs works hard, and they all train extremely hard.

The rule for doping in the IOC is never do it alone. You can be part of a state sponsored doping program and when caught, the only punishment is changing the colors of your flag at the next games

There is still tons of doping.

China does state sponsored corporate espionage and state sponsored "retraining camps". Do you think they would find their ethics when it comes to doping?

Also, tell me that the American-Italian sprinter that won the 100m isn't doping (Jacobs). It's always been that way, it will always be that way.

Athletes were setting PBs all over that track, combination of new shoe technology and the track itself being very fast.

I think they're a lot better at not getting caught than previous generations.

The Italian who won the men’s Olympic 100m title has confirmed he split with his sports nutritionist when he discovered that he was at the centre of a large police investigation into the alleged illegal distribution of anabolic steroids.

Since Lamont Marcell Jacobs stunned the world of athletics last weekend when he ran a European record of 9.80s to claim sprint gold, the fitness guru and professional bodybuilder Giacomo Spazzini has been claiming in the Italian media that he is responsible for the athlete’s transformation. Known as the “crazy long jumper”, it was not until he won the European indoor 60m title in March that Jacobs enjoyed any real success as a sprinter.

Just accept that very few athletes are clean and enjoy the games

Drug cheats get caught retroactively when the technology catches up.

Why drug cheats are still being caught seven years after the 2012 London Olympics

There are will always be doping, Russia got caught, but US and China still dominate the medal standings, they do have better athlete early identification programs but come on, when it seems to good to be true it usually is.
Bigger question is when does a drug or supplement become illegal due to performance enhancing? technically water is performance enhancing, obviously there is a line but where is it? caffeine, cold medicines are banned but you can treat injury's with cortisone with a doctors note. So blurry

I noticed the Women's discus records were set by East Germans and no one came close these games. Probably good evidence these athletes were clean.

The Jamaicans can't break Flo-Jo's 100m and 200m records too.

East Germans still hold 3 or 4 track records.

I think it's more that it's basically impossible to be as blatant as East Germany and some other Soviet bloc countries were back then. This is the current women's 800m world record holder (set in 1983) from Czechoslovakia (she says she never doped, but that's hard to believe):

FloJo's 100m will probably not be broken for a long time but that's because it was due to a technological malfunction rather than doping.

Technology improvements have also played a factor - but the fact that many 40 year old records set by Soviet Bloc countries are still standing despite 40 years of technological improvement in sports training and equipment and nutrition really says something about that.

The men's 400 hurdles was the most amazing race I have ever watched. Bronze broke the olympic record, and silver broke the world record. Gold broke the world record by almost 3/4 of a second!!! https://www.npr.org/sections/tokyo-o...-meter-hurdles

If there was doping, I guess it was really pervasive because the top three were amazing runs.

The 400m hurdles on both teens and women's side were the only records broken in Tokyo which is weird. Also the field event records were not broken, some of those have last a long time. The men's long jump one is weird. Bob Beamon in 1968 and then Mike Powell in 1991 and that's it.

It seems logical enough that a springier than usual track might help the athletes who have to jump (i.e. the hurdlers) more than those who only have to propel themselves forward.

Agreed, but just because the records haven't been broken doesn't mean there isn't doping, back then there were so many ways to mask the drugs it was easy for athletes to use anything and everything, they have to be more careful now and take more precautions.
