Flames Bennett, Rittich, Lomberg, and Valiev file for salary arbitration

40 players in total filed:
Spoiler!

https://www.nhlpa.com/news/1-17569/4...ry-arbitration

Important dates
Deadline to file for arbitration:
Player elected - July 5, 5pm ET
club elected - July 6, 5pm ET

First day arbitration hearings can be scheduled: July 20
Last day arbitration hearings can be scheduled: August 4

Length of award
The party that does not file for arbitration can choose a 1 or 2 year length for the award. The exception is that if the player is 1 year away from UFA status, the award will automatically be 1 year.

Walk Away
The walkaway threshold for salary arbitration is ~$4.397 million per year.

If the arbitrator awards a player a contract for more than that amount, the team has the right to walk away form the award and the player becomes UFA.

Otherwise if it is at or below the threshold, the team must accept the arbitrator's award and the player is signed for that amount.

Second buy-out period
Second buy-out period opens 3 days after the club's final arbitration case is settled or the arbitrator gives out an award for the final case. This window opens for 48 hours. If the club has no arbitration cases, there is no buyout window for the club.

During this second buyout window, only players who were on the reserve list at the previous trade deadline and have a cap hit of ~$3.455 mil or more can be bought out.

offer sheets
Players who file for arbitration are no longer eligible to sign offer sheets.

OMG! he filed for arbitration, negotiations must be going bad!
Not necessarily. Arbitration is sometimes used as a tool to set a deadline or to ensure a player gets a contract.

Few players actually get to an arbitration hearing with a settlement occurring even minutes before the hearing is scheduled to begin. Last year 40 of the 44 cases were settled before the hearing.

Lomberg and Valiev obviously looking for more lucrative AHL compensation.

No Oilers player..... hmmmm.

They may forfeit their second buy-out window unless the toss a name into the mix tomorrow.

I was just looking that up

So, no second buy-out window for the Oilers?

Haha!

Lomberg and Valiev are mostly AHL players. What is their angle in arbitration?

I bet only one of them actually makes it to arbitration. Rittich maybe?

Bennett even if an arbitration hearing goes strong for him surely doesn't make more than $2mil, right? Valiev and Lomberg just after higher AHL compensation likely. Rittich to me is the only one that has a strong arbitration case

There is no downside to them filing.

They can't get lower than league minimum and it guarantees their contract will be done by early August. Anything the arbitrator can potentially give them will be leverage for the Flames to settle.

Now that someone filed for arbitration means a new buyout window for the flames will open up. Wonder if Stone just from a cap space perspective

It’s entirely possible the Flames flip Frolik for a song, buyout Stone, and then close shop for the summer. The market for Brodie might not be looking so hot anymore and those moves alone would give them enough cap space to work with.

And maybe one-way deals.

Hey, at least this guarantees a second buyout window.

Sam Bennett's contract negotiations should be interesting. He's probably looking for a pretty big pay day being a former top 5 pick and all along with his strong playoff performances. But in terms of numbers and comparables, I'm not really sure what he gets. I mean honestly, there are league minimum players who can produce roughly the same numbers he's been putting up, but can his intangibles push him into the $3M-$4M range?

Very interested to see how his situation shakes down.

Where it can be an issue is when it actually goes to the hearing (and the player hears things that aren't necessarily complimentary).

Of the 4 cases that weren't settled before the hearing last year, none of the players are still with their original team (Kulak, Trouba, Ceci, and Gemel Smith).

Historically speaking, Treliving doesn't like players that file for arbitration. I don't like reading much into this, but if I try, it tells me neither Bennett nor Rittich are sacred and could be traded in near future.

Rittich filed for arbitration last year, and Treliving did not abruptly move him as a result. For all your restraint, I think you are reading too much into this.
