Gives us this roster with ~1.5 million to sign the 6th RD. This would be an "all in" move in hopes we're cup hunting over the next two seasons.
or something like Hanifin+Ritich+1st for Toews (~40% retained) + Subban

Hanifin
2021 1st (top 3 protected, goes to 2022 1st if we in fact pick top 3)
Rittich
Cond. 2022 2nd/3rd (2nd if Calgary makes it to the Conf. Finals in either year of 2021 or 2022)

For

Toews @33.33% retention (3.5m, —> 7,000,000 x 3 years)
Subban

I think both of those leave us too close to the cap.

How does a team do a rebuild if they are paying players so much to play for other teams?

A rebuild needs draft choices and cap space.

Chicago would be foolish to pay such a high percentage of Toews or Kane's salary.

I realize this may mean they can't trade them but as they are still effective players so that is not a tragedy.

If I am Chicago GM I wouldn't retain more than 10%

Retaining Toews at 1/3 allows us to offset the cap differences.

Im the one who did the posted capfriendly mix.

Subbing Rittich out for ryan in the trade gives you ~900k less room to work with, then you retained a bit less on toews, ~800k, which would give you only 100k and you'd still need a 6th RD.

But the more you retain the better the picks/prospects are, and in this offseason without retaining you won't have any suitor.

They likely wouldn't spend to the cap in the next two years anyway in a rebuild with cheaper young players.

I don't see why a rebuilding team would need cap space. Typically rebuilding teams can take on cap space in exchange for picks/prospects. Ideally, if you're rebuilding you should have a good portion of players on ELCs and bridge contracts.

Sounds like something Doug Wilson might have said when he acquired Karlsson.

I like these pairings the best in a vacuum:

Hanifin-Andersson
Valimaki-Tanev
Gio-Kylington

Gio averages 5:20/game on both PP and PK; dropping his EV time wouldn't be the end of the world (and you probably throw him an extra shift with Tanev now and then).

Flames had pretty even time at EV for their top 5 d-men last year:
Gio 18:28
Hanifin 18:12
Brodie 18:10 (Andersson)
Hamonic 18:00 (Tanev)
Andersson 17:44 (Valimaki...drop it to ~16)

I think it's possible that if Hamonic decides to play this year, he could still join the Flames on a PTO. Could be a nice fit with Valimaki

It wasn't just a tough year. If you look at anything past mid December 2018, you saw the regression start and, BT decided to pick up Oscar Fantenberg. Now let's move on to the mess of a 2019-2020 season. The regression continued with the first line, and BT once again went out and picked up another pair of defenseman in, Erick Gustafsson and Brandon Davidson. Maybe the top line hit a peak, and have come back down to earth?

I agree with all the other points that you make.

Perhaps, but where does the line fall between their peak and the scorched earth?

In 2018–19 Gaudreau, Monahan and Lindholm combined for 97 goals and 259 points. That dropped the following year to 69 (-28) and 160 (-99!). I think the smart money has them producing together somewhere closer to the middle between these figures, @ around 80 goals and 210 points.

No Hamonic. Especially pairing him with Valimaki. Look at Hanifins growth with Hamonic.

He’s a great person and a warrior, but I never want to see him in a Flames jersey again.

Thanks for reminding me that we could have had Dobson AND Valimaki on the bottom pairing.

Steinberg thinks it is 60-40 that Monahan is traded next year. He thinks Monahan was in the Andersen deal. To be clear PURE SPECULATION on his part.

Pat has been all over the Lindholm to center bandwagon for months.

What top line RW could the Flames get for Monahan?

What Andersen deal? For Freddie? Please tell me we weren’t bandying Sean Monahan for Josh.

Likely one of their goalies. It probably fell apart when they knew Markstrom was hitting the market (that’s my speculation)

I know it probably wouldn’t be an immediate improvement but what about just trading to acquire a couple RH shot youngsters who have good potential?

How much fun would Monahan for Cozens and Thompson be?

Let Cozens play with Backlund like many rookies have before him and learn how to play C from a good pro. Thompson could be a RHed version of Lucic with Bennett and Dube. Our 3 best forwards on the top line.

Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Mangiapane-Backlund-Cozens
Dube-Bennett-Thompson
Lucic-Ryan-Simon/Nordstrom

Would probably be viewed as a step back so not gonna happen and Buffalo might not be interested in trading either youngster.

Hall-Eichel-Olofsson
Skinner-Monahan-Reinhart
Eakin-Staal-Okposo
Rieder-Girgensons-Lazar

All we know is that Treliving was right in the mix for Josh Anderson. Steinburg is speculating that Monahan was the key player in the deal on the basis of what Anderson eventually returned from Montreal. I personally think it is nonsense, and as intrigued as I am about Lindholm playing at centre I don't believe he provides an improvement over Monahan.
