Don't know about that, but he most definitely knew Tolkien very well.

I read somewhere that this was the case and Peter Jackson offered him the role, but he declined due to being too old for the more physical scenes involved with Gandalf. Better off to give it to the young, spry (62 at the time I believe) McKellen.

A great actor that will be fondly remembered but will be so very much missed.

Its hard to believe he was 93, it just seemed like yesterday that he was firing lightning out of his finger tips and getting his head cut off by Anakin Skywalker.
I didn't know that in the Clone Wars animated movie that he reprised his role as Dooku.
