Yeah but that wasn't a bad signing. He got Gaudreau as less than market value.

Maybe that's why Jarmo got fired? He approached JD and ownership with this trade and they just called security and had him ushered out.

I wonder if Jarmo was going to trade Jenner and the owner said no.
Wasn't there talk that Jenner was well liked by ownership?

He got Gaudreau at exactly market value.

Marek just speculated that he believes this was done now to prevent anything done @ the deadline. Better to relieve them now rather than have him make any moves.

I mean there's many here that wish we had not let Tre control our destiny in that final year, but I think it's likely a bit different where Edwards wanted him to stay and he was done.

One that has no qualms with hiring terrible coaches.

I know he was coming off an amazing season but he is still a very slight player and if any of that shiftiness that has defined his play starts to fade it could be an anchor of a contract. To the Devils were the one team that would be forced to shed depth for him if he went there.
It is a controversial opinion but long term I think it is good for the Flames that Gaudreau left. His performance has only been marginally better than that of Huberdeau and having two 30+ year olds making 9-10 million plus for 5 more years could have been very ugly.

Actually agree with the first half of this, but if Gaudreau signs I don't think we see the big Huberdeau extension.

The timing is an indictment on the lack of confidence they have in him. "we have to get rid of you before you **** up the deadline" ouch.

The fact that JD does this now (apparently he had back surgery otherwise would have done it before/during all-star) still doesn't make sense.
The owner should bring in someone like Burke on a short term basis, keep Rick Nash, and scouting group for the draft, and fire everything else that isn't nailed down.

Well Tkachuk was gone no matter what and the deal at the time was seen to be very good for the Flames. The extension may have been a little less but I don't think by a lot. Maybe they would have walked Tkachuk to free agency and tried once again for a swing at the cup? I don't know.
The only thing I know is that Gaudreau got paid and has so far underperformed on his contract.

Burke may be best left out of this. He has had okay track records with pushing a good team over top but looking at his trade and draft history it isn't as though he has helped build a winning franchise in a long time.
I think that maybe just finding a Assistant GM from a quality team like Tulsky in Carolina would be a better option. A fresh voice may be better than someone who was affectionately known here has Tubby McBlowhard

I'm quite surprised he lasted this long.
