yeah could be.

all I was saying is you can't throw this at the feet of the association. hard to imagine though with a day full of bookings they wouldn't have built in a bit more wiggle room

oh well in years to come the kids will always have a bit of a story to tell

Even if you were on the winning team would you really take any joy in it? Pretty hollow win

“People were very angry,” Black said. “Parents pay hundreds of dollars and watch an entire season to see it decided by coin toss?”

LOL, the level of entitlement dripping from this mouth breather is hilarious.

Winsport.... epic fail.

Well Im certainly no genius, but thanks for pointing that out.

If that's what occurred I would agree, people that aren't part of the game should never ever become involved in it on the ice in any way/shape/form, but I still do not see a reference to any such behaviour in that article.

There would have been a rep from the AA council supervising the game. This was done by the book. Hockey Calgary, and especially the AA council, doesn't mess around.

I wonder if anyone asked the next group if they could cut into their ice time for a few hundred bucks. Wouldn't have taken more than 10 minutes to finish a shootout

Well if those are the rules those are the rules. It does seem like someone messed up and didn't book any contingency into the ice time though.

I remember a tournament as a kid where two teams tied their round robin game and were also tied in goal differential and penalty minutes so a place in the finals was decided by a coin toss.

I thought the same thing. It blows my mind it got to this. Enough parents should have been able to toss in a $20 to make it an easy decision for whoever followed.

Shut up his ice time was likely booked by hockey calgary. It will be interesting to see if either HC or Winsport has any official comment.

HC reps would have been there watching the games like they do for all playoff games.

Luck in hockey takes many forms - a guy hits the post instead of the open net, a penalty does or does not get called - a coin flip decides a winner and that winner then goes on to win the city finals for bantam AA.

I spent my entire adolescence playing organized hockey in Calgary so my initial thought upon reading the headline was "oh wow that sucks, what a crappy way to end a game."

Now my surprise has moved onto some of the tweets quotes and comments about it. This is 'disgusting'?.... really????
Was it ideal? No. Will it haunt these kids forever? No.

The rule is necessary, it's too bad it had to be used.

I'm sure I'd feel different if it was me playing or my kid, but I just can't find the energy to care about this. It's a freaking bantam AA game. Maybe one kid out there MIGHT get a sniff of professional hockey. MIGHT. It sucks but at the end of the day it's just a kids hockey game. Who cares?

Those kids who lost the coin toss didn't win the game so they can't be entitled to feel like they deserved to advance. I would argue that scoring a goal and having it disallowed/unnoticed is far worse stinker, because you actually won, but got your win stolen.

Eh, they get a fantastic bar-story out of it. "You think that's bad? I literally lost a game on a coin flip."

Man, I remember an international soccer tournament where two teams were tied after the group stage so they flipped a coin to decide who advanced. Crazily enough, the team that won the coin toss went on to win the whole tournament!

(it was Canada. Canada won an international tournament in this fashion)

Tell the kids that they worked hard to put themselves in a position to win a coin flip. Life is full of times where you do everything you can to get a 50/50 shot at winning. They didn't win in the alloted time, so to me the entitlement of extra ice time is ridiculous. I understand that it is difficult to explain that to a heartbroken hormone filled teenager, but it seems to me that this is a case of parents focusing on the wrong lesson.

I will now take this opportunity to get off my high horse despite what is obviously an emotional experience.
