Two things:

1. Genie is only in the main draw right now because Venus withdrew, otherwise she would have had to do qualifying. So good for her taking advantage of the opportunity, she needs the points right now.

2. They met in R4 at Wimbledon 2014 after Cornet beat Serena. Cornet being the last to beat Serena in a major before Vinci ended the calendar slam. Both those loses make total sense for Serena considering where she was in between those loses.

Thanks for the clarification; it seemed odd to me when I read it on the Tennis Canada summary. Cornet has been on the tour for awhile.

And as you mentioned, a good win. Points are points and any positivity for Genie at this juncture is crucial.

I'm too lazy to look at Cornet's current ranking, but I'm pretty sure she was a seed at all the majors last year, so this is a nice win for Genie.

Cilic defeats Milos in straight sets (7-6(3), 6-3) to take the Istanbul Open. At this point, it's just good to see Milos back playing, hopefully he can stay injury free for a while.

Maria takes the second set 6-2. She was fading five games into that second set and then Genie let her off the hook and Maria seized the opportunity to pounce.

That was a big game for Genie as it stopped a five game run for Maria. On serve in set 3.

Edit: Genie up love-40 in the third game of set 3, Maria rolls off five straight points to hold serve. Ugh.

lol - Genie down love-40 on her serve, rallies to win the game. WTA tennis, ya gotta love it.
