Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumber'd and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages, and will lie
Battening upon huge seaworms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

I've just been on the Wiki page and seen that too. My thought was 'what on earth does Seattle have to do with the Kraken?!', so I went to check it out.

I mean, I know a lot of the other teams in various leagues have names that don't necessarily relate to their (sometimes previous) location, but as far as I know, no other team has a mythical creature as their name.

Edit: I guess the Giants and Wizards. But at least they have connotations to sports, i.e. 'He's a giant of a man', or 'Allen Iverson was simply a wizard with the ball'. Do we need to bring Hasek out of retirement to play for Seattle before we can finally exclaim 'Ah, well I guess he DOES flop around like a giant squid, yeah...'

A type of rock that originated in Seattle and changed the scene of music. I love the name Seattle Grunge.

Ah, Reddit. I'd go for the 'Seattle Battle Cattle', but go one further.

Welcome to the NHL, the 'Seattle Rattle Battle Cattle '.

Honourable mention to the 'Rain City B*tch Pidgeons'
Oh, I like the Seattle CourtneykilledKurts!

I think he knows that, but what he is saying is that it's not a living thing or an object. I suspect he, like some others, doesn't like names that don't end in s (Wild, Heat, Jazz, etc).

That said, the Blues are not named that because of the colour.

Yeah, but at least there's a tenuous link, the Jersey Devil has some historical significance. Maybe I'm just being too old and pedantic about something that doesn't matter!

I did not know this, but it makes sense. Players selected in the expansion draft receive moving expenses from the league. Wonder if the team ponies up as well, the amount given seems low.

From 31 Thoughts on SportsNet:

The increased expansion fee means more “moving money” for players selected by Seattle in 2021. Those selected by Vegas received approximately $16,000 to relocate their families. Future “Krakens” get $20,000.

Back in January, someone went digging through domain registration records and found 13 names for which OVG registered the domains: https://www.detroithockey.net/news/2...greens-kraken/...
  • Seattle Cougars
  • Seattle Eagles
  • Seattle Emeralds
  • Seattle Evergreens
  • Seattle Firebirds
  • Seattle Kraken
  • Seattle Rainiers
  • Seattle Renegades
  • Seattle Sea Lions
  • Seattle Seals
  • Seattle Sockeyes
  • Seattle Totems
  • Seattle Whales
He also believes that Seattle Sasquatch might be in the mix, but wasn't able to confirm who registered that domain name.

Personally, I'd prefer Sasquatch to Kraken because it at least has links to the Pacific Northwest. The Kraken is a mythical creature from the North Atlantic.

----------

Keep in mind, the same guy did the same thing a few years ago with Vegas and came across names such as the Nighthawks, Desert Knights, and Desert Hawks, with no mention of the Golden Knights. So, take this for what it's worth.

Good find. I'd like to think that those registered names are a smokescreen, to keep suspense up about the real name. Can't think the 'Metropolitans' name wouldn't even get a mention.

It is far from mythical...as i have seen it take down many a man and woman while camping in the back country.

Now I'm hoping they go for an off the map naming convention. Washington Cascades. The Puget Sounds. etc.

I’m not sure Grunge is even a passable name. Alt-rock that was popular for like five years and is responsible for inspiring bands like Nickelback? Hard pass.

Plus, what are the uniforms supposed to be? Plaid jerseys with pants that look like ragged jean cutoffs?

No "Seattle Starpucks" as a naming option? Phh.

I am thinking they should go with "whales". Probably some good sports related puns you could make with it. "Seattle Whales got beached by the Flames" or "Seattle Whales blubber after loss to Flames".

I have it on good authority the team will be named the Seattle Seamen.

Mods, no need to PM for source (it's the guy at Lids).

Seattle Totems concept jersey. Would instantly be one of the best jerseys in the league. What a beauty.
