Like I said in the other post, in a 9 team league with only having to win 1 game to get to the grey cup, just getting there doesn't cut it. Especially when the opposition is way weaker than us.

Well this is entirely false.

They needed to win 14 games to get to the GC last year. Or does Calgary get some magic pass to 1st place every year that no one knows about?

With our domination over the past 6-7 years you are satisfied with only reaching the grey cup game? Anything less than a victory is disaster. I'll take anyone over DD calling plays any day of the week. Time for a change.

That's a big one.

Looking at this club and using last year as a comparison moving forward, they will live or die on how well they play defensively. They were top notch last year and Evans, among others, was essential to that success.

Huge signing. He was probably the most important free agent to bring back.

Veteran defensive back Jamar Wall has agreed to terms on a one-year extension in Calgary, per sources.

Since coming to the Stamps in 2012, Wall has been a reliable presence in the back end. Over six seasons in Calgary the Texas Tech product has made 305 tackles, 18 interceptions, four forced fumbles, scored four defensive touchdowns and notched two sacks in 97 games. Wall has played in every Stampeder game each of the last four seasons and named a CFL all-star twice in that span, 2014 and 2016.
Another big signing.

Federkeil retires:

https://www.cfl.ca/2018/02/08/stamps...-five-seasons/

Quote:
Calgary Stampeders offensive lineman Dan Federkeil has retired after five seasons, the team has announced.

A key national building block on the Stamps’ O-line over the years, the 34-year-old started all 17 games he appeared in last season, helping the Stampeders reach the Grey Cup for the second year in a row.

“After giving the matter careful thought, I believe this is the right time for me to bring an end to my football career and move on to the next phase of my life,” said Federkeil. “John Hufnagel and the Stampeders gave me an opportunity to resume my career five years ago and for that, I will always be grateful.”
Messam likely to reach free agency:

Quote:
According to a report from the Calgary Herald‘s Danny Austin, the Calgary Stampeders have advised national running back Jerome Messam to test free agency.

The 32-year-old running back from Brampton, Ont. is eligible to become a free agent on Feb. 13.

“We told Jerome ‘go into free agency, see what’s out there and then call us, if they’d like to’,” Stamps general manager John Hufnagel told Austin, according to a tweet Austin sent out Thursday afternoon.

No surprise that they are letting Messam hit the street. He was starting to slow down last year, though he could still get those extra couple yards, it was his initial burst that was missing. I could still see him back if he doesn't find what he wants elsewhere, but it will be a steep pay cut if so.

My real concern for this club though beyond getting another national RB, is the O line. Huf has some serious work to do there and looking at the FA list, doesn't seem to be a lot to get excited about.

The Stamps tend to like to rebuild their Oline through the draft. I don't expect that's going to change much.

I think that its a long stretch to find another National Running back, the Stamps will also probably not see Finch again.

I would expect that there will be a lot of running backs in camp this year.

Would like to have Tommie Campbell back, it's a shame that he picked last year's Grey Cup to have his worst game in a Stamps uniform, but he's a heck of a player.

I kind of saw that coming, the Stamps are looking at getting younger on offense, McDaniel while Bo's favorite target, didn't help himself after the Grey Cup game, and he's got a heavy contract.

I would expect that the Stamps are looking seriously at the free agents list this year.

Too bad Eric Rogers didn't come back to the team after being cut by SF, although not sure of his medical situation. He is the kind of player we need

I could see Quay back on a cheaper deal.

Quote:
“This is a very difficult decision that was made necessary because of the realities of the salary-cap system,” said Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel. “Marquay has been an excellent player for us for the past six seasons and we owed him the opportunity to explore his options around the league prior to the start of free agency on Tuesday. We wish him the best of luck and would certainly welcome him back in the future if the circumstances were right for both sides.”
