Default Ownership of old IDE Drive

So I am trying to get files off an old IDE drive and I am running into ownership issues. Each file I got to it is causing me to go and change the ownership which is quite tedious. I tried changing it on folder level and apply to all files within and it is not helping still won't change individual files. I have also tried takeown in command prompt and it always runs then hits a problem and says device is unresponsive mid may through. Is there an easier way to do this? All the files I want are in one area of the old drive.

What version of Windows?

If it's Win7 you should be able to just right click the drive letter - properties - security - users - then check "full control" and apply.

I can't remember the procedure in WinXP but I don't think it was too far off that.

You are logged in as an administrator though right?

Assuming you have already done this, but just in case.

Right click -> Properties -> Security -> Advanced -> Owner Tab-> Edit ->
Choose current User from list
Check box to Replace Owner on Subcontainers and Objects.
Click Apply

Right click -> Properties -> Security -> Advanced, Permission Tab:
Check box Replace all child object permissions with inheiritable perminssions from this object.
If current user is in the Permission entries, select it, hit Edit and ensure it has full control.
If it isn't, then click Add and add it with Full Control.
Then Apply.

But it really sounds like there are issue with the disk. A tool like TestDisk might help.

IIRC you get better control over file permissions in XP by booting into safe mode.
