He has a chance to do something with the opportunity handed to Tobias Rieder, Ryan Spooner, Drake Caggiula, Jesse Puljujarvi, Kailer Yamamoto and others last season.
Reider scored 12-16 goals every year until Edmonton. Spooner, over 10. The others were ruined from the get go. Poor old Nygard is in for it.
It was probably the best decision as unless he was really, really good it's not likely he would get near the ice time in Calgary that he will in Edmonton.
Could go either way. If he's a legit top 6 NHL quality winger then yes he made the right choice because he'd have a tough slog to get that kind of opportunity here... if on the other hand he's a legit NHL quality forward but not Top 6 quality (let's say he's like a Freddie Sjostrom)... well then he just made a mistake because playing with Mangiapane and Ryan beats the heck out of playing with Brodziak & Rattie.

Allow me to list the forwards who played the most EV minutes with Connor McDavid this season (in order):
Leon Draisaitl
Zach Kassian
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Alex Chiasson
Ty Rattie
Drake Caggiula
Milan Lucic
Half of these guys are waiver material, never mind legit top -6 talent.
If this Nygard kid has two feet and a heartbeat he'll get multiple extended stretches on the top line.
