I think his defensive issues are overblown

So with guys like this, who seem great at offense and mediocre at defense, why not move them to a forward position?

Strong stuff from #Flames third-round pick Jeremie Poirier — a blue-liner with eye-popping offensive numbers — on critiques of his defensive-zone play: “The criticisms are not wrong. They’re right. My defensive game is not a strength of mine ... ” (1 of 2)

Continued ... “I’m not really good enough to be at the next level yet on the defensive side of my game. So I’m going to keep working on that and keep getting better. I’m determined to show the Flames what I can do on the defensive side of my game, too.”

Not trying to be a negative nancy but hopefully sharing some of what Mark Edwards said about Poirier:
- poor skater, caught flat footed often
- compete and hockey sense are red flags, was caught quitting on plays
-either not interested in defending or capable of it

Some questions around his coaching supports/systems as maybe if he has somebody to help develop that defensive side of his game he could be less of an issue defensively.

The hands and skill are overwhelmingly attractive though.

So I've now read in this thread that he is both an excellent skater and a poor skater. Just goes to show there is a lot of noise on draft day.

Solid pick.
That was the old school approach: pair the finesse guy with the basher.

Especially if they excel at speed and stick handling?

For once it was nice to actually get the guy, where you know the 10 fanbases before/after the pick were hitting F5 hoping they’d get him

Not often do you see a prospect or player reply to the Flames fb page, sounds like he looks forward to playing in Calgary.

Just checked - it's not the same Poirier.

Haha, judging by the guy's Facebook profile it's a different guy with the same name.

Same sort of thing happened with Ryan Francis. The Flames tagged the wrong hockey playing Ryan Francis on Twitter and the guy played along and replied, tagging the correct one:

Poirier has so much skill. Hopefully he can sort out the defensive end of the game.

A couple interesting articles analyzing his defensive game:

Man those highlights are something.

What a contrast. His hands are amazing. And yet he’s so bad defensively I’m surprised he’s managed to stay in the Q, 20 goals or not. Almost not even believable kinda bad. Put Gaudreau on D in a charity exhibition game and he’d be better.

Seems like a committed guy. It’ll be neat to see how he develops.

I respect the fact Poirier is fully aware he is a disaster in his own end. I respect the fact that he says he is going to commit to becoming better defensively.

The offense this guys has is almost rarified air. But its absolutely useless if he can't defend.

Make him a winger and teach him how to play adequate defense. He may become a middle six forward.
