Saros's stats don't look overly impressive. But I can't claim to have really watched him a lot.

He'll turn 37 during the season. Whatever. Flames still need an upgrade in net.
It's all fun and dandy the team has made upgrades in the top and bottom 6, Brodano will be reunited and we finally have a decent backup. But all that goes out the window if Smith goes down with injury. Or he doesn't play as good as last season

Exactly. we have seen this sort of situation happen too often. Flames have had goalies get hurt in the past and the season, or the playoffs went out the door. Treliving can't afford to have that happen again. An ideal situation would be Saros play the season with Smith and then bring up and add your back up next season with Saros being the #! (if he earns it).

Every time i see Saros play he looks amazing. Small but very athletic.

Forget about trying to develop the next #1 if you can’t even trust them to be a #2. It’s like adding Hamonic when you had Stone as reasonable option in your top 4. A year later and you’re now trying to make room for Andersson and perhaps Valimaki.
If Smith goes down there are options. Vegas was down to their 4th or 5th string goalie for awhile there and survived. Give Smith 60 games and let the backups fight for the remaining 22... and if Smith can’t stay healthy you find a stopgap as insurance in case Rittich and Gillies BOTH falter.

Local boy too, but just inked a 2 year deal in February though. Cant see them trading a reliable back up, unless they have some up and comers?

I know Price is a huge gamble, but I'd still make it. I have my doubts about how bad his health has really been the last few years - I think he hasn't been playing through nicks and bumps because he knows his team is run by fools.
He played more games than Smith did last year, and he's played 59+ games in three of the last five seasons. At the 2014 World Cup, he was still clearly Carey Price.
I think all the years in Montreal have worn on him, and I think he's done with having to be 1997 Hasek every night to bail out a rube who thought Jonathan Drouin was a #1C.
Were Mike Smith four years younger, I would say the Flames are a dark horse contender. With Carey Price, I think this group becomes the favorite for the division, and a serious threat to come out of the west.

This what kind of happened last season and hurt us heading down the stretch. You don't think it would be better to have that insurance in place now rather than gamble on it later when it might be too late?

Exactly. Whatever the cost to get a goalie now is, the Price does not go down if Mike Smith breaks his hip.

Price at 50% retained I think Montreal would expect a lot back in return.
An A prospect, young roster player and a 1st rounder.
Price is still an elite goaltender. Like you said, he just plays for a trash team with horrible management.
Price at 5.25 is an amazing deal.

It doesn't have to be 50%. It can be 25. Montreal needs out from under that contract in the worst way.

Acquiring Price likely wins us the Stanley Cup, if the cost is Välimäki, Bennett and '19 1st then just Do It!
It's the only way we'll get long term elite goal tending.
Knowing Treliving, he could probably pull off the deal with Kylington/Andersson, Mangiapane/Dubé and a 1st.

Nobody makes getting a Stanley Cup likely. Even the best team in the NHL likely has less than a 15% chance of winning the cup in any given year.

If Calgary could get Saros for any two of their prospects, they should pull the trigger.
