Default Monahan - Everything is going as planned

Quote:
The sling has vanished.

The spirits are up.

The timetable is bang-on schedule.

"Everything," reports Sean Monahan, "is going just as planned.

"The hip area, I'd say, is 100 percent cleared and now it's a matter of being back on the ice and getting used to shooting and stuff again.

"I've been working out and haven't been limited in doing anything."

Post-season, when news broke of the full extent of the injuries Johnny Gaudreau's partner in crime and fulcrum of the Flames' top line had been dealing with, it seemed mind-boggling.

Four surgeries: Wrist, groin, and two for hernias.
Crazy he still put up some pretty decent numbers with essentially one hand.

Quote:
"But the wrist … it's just more annoying than anything. In a cast for six weeks, you get it off and your arm feels a little weird for a while.

"Getting that motion back in your hand, because it's been stabilized for a long time - that one you've gotta work through.

"My wrist had been bothering for me for a long time. Probably the last 30, 40 games of the season I literally could barely hold my stick.

"Which is tough being a centreman when you've got to take faceoffs.

Yet somehow, he apparently lacks the drive to win, right Eric Francis?

Anyone who has ever questioned this kid's skill or desire to win needs to take off their jersey and leave it at the door on their way out.

Especially after hearing how Mony was pissed on being shut down for the season. He's a guy who you build championship teams around.

His injury for the last half of the season certainly aligns with how hot he was towards the beginning of the season and then not playing as well afterwards. It's still really impressive that he managed to pull off another 30-30 season. I am expecting him to put up 35-35 at minimum next season.

It is great that he got all the required surgeries completed early and hopefully takes the time to rest his body a bit after healing.

It drives me nuts when teams announce their player has gone under the knife like 1 or 2 months after the season has ended and might miss camp because of it.

Why so pessimistic? Remember the new coach? At least 70-70!

I agree. However in some of those instances there is probably a chance that rehab can be done to avoid surgery and rehab just doesn't go as hoped. Still sucks though.

I think Monahan is capable of scoring 40. He would've gotten close if he didn't get injured this year.

Its good to see that hes healthy and rested, I just hope that he works hard during pre-season so that he doesnt come out of the gates sluggish.

Its always tough to come right back from a bunch of injuries.

How often is this true of players who undergo surgery with months of recovery time before the start of the next season?

Very often?

Two Hernias not-withstanding, hes going to have to completely rediscover his timing at the NHL level and nothing will do that other than playing which is why I said I hope he gets as much done in the pre-season as possible.

Most players use the off-season to train, bulk-up or slim-down whatever their case may be, but hes obviously going to be a little farther behind than he would have been had he not been injured.

Hes playing catch-up, the best place to play that is in the pre-season.

There were so many contributing factors to the late season slide that it's lazy journalism to simply declare that the players lacked the drive to win.

I assumed Gulutzan was injured all season.

Good to hear that things are progressing. Monahan's by far the best finisher on the team. If he stays healthy, he's in that age range where he should be able to put up a career high for goals.
