I’m not really concerned about stress on the seatpost. I’m not a big dude, the seatbag carries clothes mostly, probably weighs in at 10lbs. Have you broken a seatpost before or something?

I actually have a really nice stainless-steel Nitto rear rack that I would use if I was doing a pannier setup. Lightweight aluminum racks are fine for around town, (I have two of them) but they will not stand up to long distance touring or bikepacking. The welds will break and you will have to zip tie and tape it back together if you are outside of N. America or Europe.

I don’t really see any advantages to a pannier type system. The bikepacking setup makes me pare down what I am carrying, it’s lighter overall and allows me to get into tighter single track areas where I wouldn’t be able to go with panniers.

for anyone who is rinding into that wind today, you'll likely be wishing you had a root canal scheduled, as walking into it was work.

Spoiler!

Holy crap, it's off the charts! It's going to flip around any minute now, I'm sure. By 4 o'clock, anyway. Surly.

That was hard. Path was iced over pretty good in spots. 30 minutes slower than my usual time. Be careful out there. Our building's sidewalk might have been the worst spot on the ride.

Ya, that was sufficiently sucky. Almost doubled my normal time. Wish I had put the studded tires on! Tomorrow would be hopeless without them, so I threw them on when I got home.

Even with the studs it was super sketchy in spots.

This afternoon I thought it was going to be awesome coming home with the wind, but boy was it not.

Avoided the paths today, as they're icy death. The roads were pretty good.

I had a brief moment where I considered the sidewalk up 4th st or Confederation Park. Before I had time to decide, my reflexes had me in Confed, as that is how I always go. What a mistake! I ended up riding on the grass most of it, what a slog. Roads are nice though, happy I put the studs on last night.

Most of the pathways were pretty clear (Riverwalk, Nose creek), however I did encounter those iced up, rutty, garbage sections on the north Bow river path near Bridgeland LRT station, and then again on the Fox Hollow hill.

crying shame that with a tailwind like that you could not have set personal bests on most of your segments

I was on my winter bike which isn't going to set any records in anything except the slowest categories and there was so much ice it was not worth the risk. I was also carrying my work laptop so crashing would not be the best situation. If it was that windy and the pavement was dry and I had the road bike, I could definitely set records. That wind was crazy.

No ride today for me, working downtown and my knees need a day off.

Still a little standing snow by Laycock Park, but the road tires cut through that stuff like butter!

I think you’ll be good. Most paths were nice and dried out, only problem section I’m anticipating tomorrow morning is that low spot just west of the Bridgeland LRT station. The water is still pooled there and it doesn’t get much sun.

You should be fine. If I wasn't so lazy I'd take my studded tires off tonight.

Pretty much all clear this morning. That low section by Bridgeland LRT had some ice on the path but easily avoided. However I did hit a bloody ridge of ice that was going across the Nose creek path right under 16th avenue where water pools. It just looked like a little puddle and then <BAM> hit the ridge and it knocked me up off my seat.

All clear this morning from the west. Wasn't even as cold as I feared, shorts still rule the day.
Haven't racked up the mileage that some of you have this year, but this week I should pass 3000 km for the year. Commuting only, lots of rides home get extended though.
