I think to save space you are going to see alot of "Utility Cities" that provide Power, minerals, garbage etc.
A place like Gaugin Valley in Veridian Woods with only 40% buildable area is going to have to be a Coal Power making machine for the rest of the Cities in the region to limit pollution and garbage.

Is there a reason for the 6 city connections limit?
When you posted the pics of the regions I thought it was weird why the highways looked so oddly designed as to not connect to every different city.

I'm not sure of the reasoning as I haven't played yet. That said, I think that they didn't want it to be overwhelming trying to deal with how the interconnected nature works when you have 15 cities connected to yours.
There is a 7 city region called Reflection Atoll, where all the cities are connected.

Ocean Quigley's response when I asked him about the Ars Technica article:
Ocean Quigley @oceanquigley
@Nehkara There are always going to be people who wished we made SimCity 4++ rather than something new.

For sure, it's always good to see what are deal-breakers for others though to ensure that one doesn't have the same deal-breakers.
The small city area I don't think I'll be much concerned with (though I will probably chafe at using a grid to maximize land use all the time), the no save/load thing though will probably be my biggest complaint.

Anyone who has played the trial - is there away to turn off disasters?
I am not a big fan of Meteor showers or Zombie attacks

That's a great point and I'm hoping the gameplay will reward us with complex city management. But bare in mind maxis also has removed some pretty essential stuff. Mixed zones, 1 way streets, highways, I think subways? They've dumbed down things a lot which is strange when you consider how complex the sim engine seems to be.
I think where the fork in the road appears to be is maxis from simming entire buildings to simming the residents within them. Fundamentally as players will we be able to recognize this difference? And if so will the return be enough to give up actual city building and settle instead on town building and region growing?
I think the answer will be no and no.

Guess I'm going to need a good old fashioned CP review of the released game before I go out and buy it.
I was and maybe still am looking forward to SimCity, but there seems to be a lot of negative surrounding this game.

I actually don't think the game will be dumbed down at all. I have heard from people who have played the full game that it is quite challenging and that managing specializations is engaging and a lot of fun on top of the base RCI game.
Yes there are some things missing that were in previous SimCity games but there is a lot there that has never been there before.
If city size is your main concern and motivator though, I suspect that you won't be satisfied until Maxis delivers larger city sizes which are apparently coming at some point.
For me, I'm excited to make a bunch of different cities in different regions playing with my friends.

Every review/impressions that has come out so far has been positive except for Ars Technica. I am not linking them here because they are all in different languages but there have been two European reviews thus far as well which are 9/10 (GameReactor Sweden/Norway) and 10/10 (EuroGamer).
BUT - If you are unsure, definitely wait. There is nothing worse than spending a lot of money on a game to find out you don't enjoy it at all. It has happened enough times to me!

Pretty cool... one of the reasons I got really into this game is because the Developers have been so involved.

There's a huge part of me that wishes there were sites where developers could interact with the community. Or at least sites that weren't dedicated to child porn, hating women, and repetitive memes.

The short answer is yes, but it is more complicated than that.
You can play in Sandbox mode which allows cheats and for disasters to be turned off, but there is no leaderboard participation or achievements.
If you play in normal mode you gotta deal with the Giant Garbage-Eating Lizards like the rest of us!

I find Reddit useful, like most of the internet it all depends what parts of it you venture into.

Peter is going off the deep end lol:
"So imagine you're playing a public game of SC5, and depend on your neighbour for power. Your neighbour decides to stop selling to you. You then suffer permadeath as everyone flees your powerless city."
Fairly clear he wanted to play a spreadsheet - huge sprawling cities driven by table look ups for traffic density, growth, etc, rather than a finite element driven sim from the bottom up, rather than the macro down.
There's very little room for emergent behaviour in the style of game he wants, and it lends itself to "perfect" builds like the earlier Simcity editions did - where a specific configuration of a city led to maximal results in the values output by the calculation engine. This version, I suspect, will move away from that quite dramatically. Breadth vs Depth.

Absolutely, but not only that... you could buy power from someone else or, unless you are broke and have used all of your bonds, you could just build your own power generation.

I prefer the smaller cities if we're actually getting a meaningful presentation of the game with glass box.
Yeah, it would be great if plots were bigger, but they aren't. At least I'll get a more emotional experience from my cities.
