A goal and an assist in a 6–3 loss against Drummondville last night. Poirier is having a hell of a season. This kid is making Flames scouts look really good for having picked him in the mid-first round. I think he will be a special player.

Point progressions over the last 3 seasons...

Shinkaruk:

2011/12 91 pts 1.38 PPG
2012/13 86 pts 1.34 PPG
2013/14 10 pts 1.43 PPG (7 games - he must be injured)

Poirier:

2011/12 40 pts 0.60 PPG
2012/13 70 pts 1.08 PPG
2013/14 29 pts 1.61 PPG

While Shinkaruk has been flat, Poirier has been improving by half a point per game each year.

The progressions for goals are even more pronounced...

49 G 0.74 GPG
37 G 0.58 GPG
4 G 0.57 GPG

15 G 0.22 GPG
32 G 0.49 GPG
14 G 0.78 GPG

Then consider things like size and grit - hard to disagree with their choice.

Careful, unless you're a ginger yourself, you probably shouldn't be throwin around that term all willy nilly.

In all the thread, in all the sub forums, I never thought I'd see Tim Minchin show up in an Emile Poirier thread,

CALGARY, AB -- Calgary Flames prospect Emile Poirier has been the QMJHL's second star of the month for October.

Poirier, who was selected 22nd overall in the 2013 NHL Draft, recorded 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) in 13 games last month. He scored 4 game-winning goals, 2 power play goals, 1 short-handed goal and was a +11 in October.

Poirier is currently tied for second in league scoring with 27 points, tied with Anthony DeLuca of the Rimouski Oceanic.

He is currently riding a 13-game point streak.
Thrilled with this pick!

May have found an interesting quirk with the CBA and whether Poirier's ELC will slide next year or not.

I believe if I am reading the CBA correctly, Poirier's ELC will not slide next year, regardless of actual NHL games played, if he doesn't sign an ELC before December 31st, 2013.

This is what the CBA says:
Quote:
In the event that an 18 year old or 19 year old Player signs an SPC with a Club but does not play at least ten (10) NHL Games in the first season
under that SPC, the term of his SPC and his number of years in the Entry
Level System shall be extended for a period of one (1) year, except that
this automatic extension will not apply to a Player who is 19 according to
Section 9.2 by virtue of turning 20 between September 16 and December
31 in the year in which he first signs an SPC. Unless a Player and Club
expressly agree to the contrary, in the event a Player's SPC is extended an
additional year in accordance with this subsection, all terms of the SPC,
with the exception of Signing Bonuses, but including Paragraph 1 Salary,
games played bonuses and Exhibit 5 bonuses, shall be extended; provided,
however, that the Player's Paragraph 1 Salary shall be extended in all
circumstances.
This is what Section 9.2 says
Quote:
9.2 Age of Players.
As used in this Article, "age," including "First SPC Signing Age," means
a Player's age on September 15 of the calendar year in which he signs an SPC, regardless of his actual age on the date he signs such SPC.
So the problem is this statement: "except that this automatic extension will not apply to a Player who is 19 according to Section 9.2 by virtue of turning 20 between September 16 and December 31 in the year in which he first signs an SPC."

Poirier will turn 19 on December 14, 2013. So this statement is very important.

If he signs before December 31, 2013, then he would not be turning 20 between September 16 and December 31 in the year in which he first signs a contract and then the ELC would slide, if he plays less than 10 NHL games.

However, if he signs after December 31, 2013 he would be turning 20 in the year which he first signs the contract and his contract would not slide even if the Flames sent him back to junior with 0 NHL games played.

Excellent post, sureloss.

However, I think there is zero chance he would be sent back to junior next year.

Nonetheless, he very well could spend the season in Abby, and if so, it would be awesome if his contract were to slide. Well, awesome for us, not so much for him.

Interesting find SureLoss.

Something to possibly look forward to before the new year.

Just want to add that if Poirier does not sign before Jan 1, 2014, it doesn't necessarily mean the Flames management are incompetent.

It could very well be the strategy Poirier and his agent chose to take to get out of an ELC faster afforded to them by the CBA.

The ELC ending later for a young player is not always a bad thing, could lead to a bigger 3nd contract if he uses the extra year of development to become a better player.

His contract cant slide if he plays in the AHL right? Just his time to become a free agent.

The Flames will likely treat him like they did Culkin this year and wait until next year's training camp to decide to sign him or send him back to the Q.

Based on what Feaster said going into camp this year, they were prepared to offer Culkin a contract and keep him in the AHL/NHL if his performance in the preseason warranted it.

The way Poirier has performed since he was drafted, it's hard to imagine a scenario where he doesn't turn pro next year.

Seems moot as the chances of the Flames sending him back to junior to play an overage season are slim to none.
