Does anyone else notice that the later episodes in each season seem to be so much better than the earlier ones? Maybe one thing with TNG/DS9 is that because they made so many more episodes per season the actors could get into a groove with their characters more? Seth Macfarlane has improved as the straight man now he isn't just trying to copy Picard, but I do find his right eyelid somewhat distracting. It is very much not symmetrical with his left. And Talia is such an improvement over Alara, both the character and the actor.
Obviously Scott Grimes stole the whole show tonight. Simply outstanding, and Gordon is easily my favorite character.
I still like Alara because she's such a different character from Talia, who comes across as confident, experienced and a bullet catcher.
I guess in the future its ok for the ships helms man to shoot back a shot of whisky and the security chief to have a drink. I laughed at that more then a lot of other things.
The only effect that I didn't like was when Gordon left the shuttle, it just looked really terrible. But seconds later when they did the face shot as he was spinning out of control, that was a great shot.

My only complaint is this one fell into the Star Trek Trope of the Union being perfect. I think having Orn be innocent and the Union and Mercer having to choose between peace and an innocent individual would have made for a more interesting show.

I don't disagree with you on that at all. however I felt that there were two points to that.
You could see that Ed and Kelly were uncomfortable talking to the Admiral about the extradition. The argument between Ed and Gord really emphasized that with an almost Star Trek VI esque line, they're butchers and zealots, really reflected the Kirk line about the Klingons "Let them die"

So that episode was basically Star Trek VI? Just like The Undiscovered Country is one of the best Trek films, the Orville version was one of its’ best episodes. I loved it!

I really enjoyed tonights episode and it was a nice way to take a breath after 3 episodes of war, crew endangerment and moral choices.
Scott Grimes continues to expand his role and he was incredibly good tonight as he

fell in love with a holographic creation from a cellphone found in a time capsule from 2015.
The sad thing about this episode is that it always answers the what if questions in our life. What if I didn't fall in love with that person, or what if she wasn't dating that guy, thankfully the great thing about this episode is Gordon realized that by deleting Lauren the girl from the cellphones ex boyfriend that he changed her into a different and not as complete person. This went beyond the run of the mill Geordie falls in love with a hologram episode of TNG as Gordon had a chance to create a perfect relationship but in the end he couldn't do it.
I've said it before Scott Grimes is a god damn treasure.
The other storyline was played for comedy as the other item in the time capsule was a pack of Cigarettes and Bortas and Kyldon are highly susceptible to Nicotine addiction, the final brawl between those two was great comedy for me.
Overall this was a breather episode before things ramp up to the final string of episodes.

That being said, I felt him being so completely open about what he was up to in the simulator didn't really make sense. Holo-addiction (simulator addiction)is nothing new in many different kinds of sci-fi, and then they covered porn addiction in an episode already. I feel the creative team missed a great chance for Gordon to keep it a secret, get in way way deeper, and make his eventual downfall and then the ending very tragic. I feel it would have been an improvement.
Also, the Bortus and Klyden side show is getting old. Either they're violent bigots or imbecilic clowns. Surely some of the other characters can take the comic-relief role once in a while?
It wasn't a bad episode by any means and I did enjoy it, but it was very vanilla.

But it wasn't about holo-addiction. It was about a guy being overjoyed to finally find that relationship he's been looking for and shouting it from the rooftops. Plus he brought up good points on what makes someone alive; Malloy wasn't addicted to the simulator, he was in love with his perception of something, kind of like loving from afar.
Remember that we previously had a episode that showed that Gordon was completely awkward around woman and un lucky in love.
He literally fell in love with a construct of a data file, I don't think that he was addicted to the holodeck as he was addicted to an ideal woman. He fell in love with a phone file.
I think we all do that from time to time.
I think the important thing in the episode is that Gordon thought that he could change the reality, he forgot that Lauren had a life and he really couldn't accept that the things that happened were pre-destined, ie going back to Greg.
I like the comparison of this episode with the episode where Geordi fell in love with the holo simulation of the woman that designed the Enterprise warp core, but if you go back and watch that episode, Geordie was actually kind of creepy in that episode as he tried to make her an ideal woman and changed the personality of the holo deck creation of what was basically a training tape.
Go back and watch it, I dare you, its actually a creepy episode about compulsion.

I get what you're saying it was a missed opportunity but I'm glad they didn't go that route, been there done that so many times.
