Just interesting that Kapanen is the best they could do for that pick.

It's about his cap hit.
He makes like a 100k more than Derek Ryan and is a better player, and he's still RFA at the end of his deal.
He's a 20 goal scorer on Crosby or Malkin's wing, that's great value for 3.2x3
This is probably an indication they are going to let Sheary walk.

Since drafting Kapanen in 2014 and barring future trades, the Pens are now set to only have drafted once in the 1st round from 2015 to 2022 (7 drafts).

I expect Kapanen will look really good with a larger role in Pitt.
Also, his cap hit is not enough to allow them to go after Brodie. They will now have $7.7M of room, and needing 7 guys to fill out the roster. Even with 6 of those guys at league minimum, that only leaves $3M.
They would still have to move another large ticket before they could go after Brodie.

But Malkin and Crosby won't be. Kapanen is a good player that can supplement that lineup, but without Crosby and Malkin the Penguins are rebuilding. That was the point.

That's a good point that the Pens had drafted Kapanen. They are more familiar with the player then.

Not bad at all for the Leafs getting a mid first, and for the Pens, works because they get a young guy under contract with legs and scoring. Monahan or Gaudreau if dealt, should have a better return so this is exciting.

I was hoping at one time the Flames would get Kapanen but Calgary has this thing for Swedes, I could still see a Nylander package coming here... maybe for Jankowski & Hanifin? (Leafs probably want Bennett instead of Jankowski though)

To some degree it shows because their lineup looks old for at least a couple seasons. But this deal makes sense because they can take another run with Crosby and Malkin while still getting younger.

I don't get this trade. I think hanifin has more value than Nylander. I hope to hell this in not a thing

Can’t see it. We’re already likely losing both Brodie and Hamonic. To trade out Hanifin for winger help when we can take a run at Hall without giving up any assets doesn’t make sense

I think Kapanen will have bigger role in Pittsburgh. As we know right hand shots are tough to come by. I think Toronto is going to look bigger and go after Pietrangelo. I think Brodie might also be an option if they can move Nylander. I also believe they will be looking to adding some size and grit to the bottom 6. They might achieve this with a Nylander trade. I do wonder if there might be something there between Calgary and Toronto if the flames lose out on Hall. I am not to sure what that would look like, maybe a couple draft picks and Ryan and kylington. Helps Toronto with cap space. Calgary gets a top 6 player but also adds cap. I think there is lots of teams looking to make bold moves this year as teams try to keep there team relevant in a Covid climate.

Hanifin is not being traded, maybe you should take look at the Flames depth chart.

Did pittsburgh really need more forwards?

I don't know why Pittsburgh keeps trading so many futures for mid-range players. IMO this is a huge overpayment for a player in Kapanen who really isn't very good.

I think it's likelier than not that Hanifin will be moved this offseason if the Flames can get a defender back in a gaudreau or monahan trade.
Just get the sense the organization is not satisfied with his development, even with the relative lack of depth at the position.

On first glance, I like this trade for both sides.
Pittsburgh will recover assets by moving Matt Murray. Kapanen will get a shot with. Crosby or Malkin

They are trying to squeeze out one more cup from the Crosby era.
Which i agree with. When you have a player like that - you go for it until he's done.
After which they will be re-building completely from nothing and it will be probably a long one.

Some people close to Penguins are shocked that Hallander and 15th overall are part of this trade.
Hallander was highly touted in the organization it seems.
Does seem like an overpay for the Pens. You can put anybody on Crosby's wing and they will score 20, so why pay a 1st and a top prospect for a guy that probably does just that.
