Flames will acquire Alexander Galchenyuk.

And finally the Flames will hire Mike Babcock as their next head coach.

I think Washington would be a good trade partner, and possible destination for someone like Monahan or Gaudreau.
The Caps have to be in win now mode with so much cap tied up in great, but older players. Losing Backstrom to injury showed their lack of center depth.

Monahan and Bennett for Tom Wilson and Connor McMichael

Balance the trade with picks or salary retention as necessary

My reasoning is that he has finished both seasons as the backup and I don't see Flames going into next season with him as starter. If they go 1a and 1B again, then he could certainly stay.

But he is paid a lot as a backup and depending on what Treliving wants to do, I could see them needing the money especially if a true starter comes in. It could be a tight market for goalies and you'd think someone would need to see him as 1A or 1B for the money to work.

But yeah if you retain $1 million you have to think someone sees him as at least as a backup. And that's better for Flames than a buyout.

God knows the last impression anyone has of him would scream stay away so I'm not ready to rule out possibility of a buyout.

Yeah signing Rieder would be great. I think you could get him at 2 years, $1m per. That would probably be just fine. Great PKer and it looks like he's finding his offensive confidence again.

Flames really need to make Lucic or Backlund salary go away. That happens they have space to deal with longer term salaries for their RFAs the following summer.

What I think happens.

1. Ward brought back as coach.
2. Gaudreau traded for Gostisbehere.
3. Miss out on a free agent of significance by chasing Hall, who goes back east to a winner.
4. Resign Forbort, Gustafsson, Talbot, Jankowski.
5. Rinse and repeat.

Flames will lose a bunch of players to FA; sign back a few minor guys from FA.
No one of significance will move, but Tre will "be in on" quite a few deals.
The interim coach will become the head coach.
Edwards will make another $30-40 million from increasing value of the team.
CP will collectively explode because nothing of use actually happened.

Guadreau to New Jersey for Micheal McLeod, Nick Merkley and a swap of 1st round picks Calgary gets NJs 7th and NJ gets our 19th.

Hannafin and RFA Jankowski to Toronto for Nylander. They are desparate for D and Dubas is stupid.

Hamonic is allowed to walk and signs a friendly contract with the Jets and is as close to home as possible.

Brodie is resigned for 5.25 M x 5 years Gios faltering and Brodie is a proto type for todays great skating puck carrying D and we'll need leadership with young D.
Talbot resigns for 3.5 M x 3 years we have to sign an expensive goalie no matter what and hes good and he likes it here.
Mangiapane signs for 1.6m x 2 years

Treliving sings Hall for 8.25 M x 5 years.

Conner Mackay makes the team out of camp at LD.

So Johnny and Noah out and Hall and Nylander in "Bobs your uncle!"
