There is value in having continuity in the General Manager position. There's more consistency in how the players are drafted and developed.
The longest tenured GMs in the league are in Nashville, San Jose, Anaheim, Chicago, and St. Louis.
Those have basically been the most consistent teams in the west.

Which came first? The really good GM, or the well performing team that makes it unlikely to fire a GM? What I mean is, just keeping a GM for a long time isn't necessarily a recipe for success.
I do think BT is one of the good ones though.

Good to see there won't be a lame duck situation. I feel over the years the good has outweighed the bad but for the team to maximize it's window he needs to do a better job in free agency going forward.

Flames sign Treliving to multi year extension (3 years)
I feel comfortable with Treliving, while at the same time being glad it’s not an especially long-term extension.
His teams need to show some consistent results and actually do something in the playoffs before I can consider him a good GM. But he generally has had more good than bad moves, so he’s on the right track.

Might as well hang on to him if he is willing to stay.
He has made some mistakes, but you can't be afraid to make mistakes. No risk, no reward. He has come out ahead more often than not and competency is rare it seems.
I like that it keeps him in the long-term process as well. GMs near the end of their contracts and at risk of being released, often make panic moves that they know if they don't work out, it will be someone else's problem. Not saying Treliving would do that per se, but it happens.

Actually...
https://www.eliteprospects.com/playe...brad-treliving
Played a few seasons of pro hockey, mostly in the ECHL with 15 games in the AHL, before he retired to start his own entire pro league at the ripe age of 26.
243 GP in the ECHL with 102 points isn't too shabby for a defenseman. That's 0.42 PPG.
This is a great value contract and he's due for a break out season any day now!

Was the holdup on his last extension on his end so he could diplomatically separate himself from Ken King, maybe even Burke & have complete autonomy in hockey operation decisions (outside of $)?

Treliving has been the best move this team has made since Darryl Sutter as head coach IMO.
Glad to see him sticking around.

My big takeaway is that while he's made mistakes, he has generally learned from them and improved in most areas of his management as a result. He's both willing to make bold moves and smart enough to be cautious when he needs to. I'm thrilled to have some continued stability with him around longer. Good for Tre.
