How do you sell yourself as a geology vet in a brand new discipline of data analytics? I am trying to see if I can change careers too but it seems like companies only want to hire people who has experience and get hit the ground running. That's especially true for IT disciplines as they are hiring for expert knowledge in a specific type of application/system.

Also it sounds like you are starting in a junior role, did you take a big haircut in terms of compensation?

In terms of compensation they offered about 10% more than what I was expecting as a floor and it is marginally more than what my starting salary was as a Geologist 15 years ago. I expect that salary progression should be pretty decent and steady and I anticipate that opportunities will be plentiful as I establish some experience in the field
My first assumption was you landed another geologist role so my apologies.
Just wondering how long it took to acquire the new qualifications, cost of the schooling, and where you did it. Good job btw for the quick pivot. You’ve also helped prove to everyone here that is is indeed possible.

I pivoted from petroleum engineering to finance. Took a trim at first but accelerated up the chain fast. The key for me was taking my CFA...career switches are completely possible though.

If you need names I can PM you several and you go from there. If it’s to look over a severance package “offer” it may be worth it. Just be warned most are fairly pricey. My dude was under $500 and well worth it for his immediate engagement, thoroughness, and pragmatic approach.

Publically the enrollment requirements are here:

If anyone has specific questions I'm more than happy to fill in gaps where I can.

Thanks for this Captain. I've been trying to break in to the tech field for a few months now with no success. I was thinking of sending my resume in for this, but I don't think I have what you're looking for.

If your company plans on hiring any junior developers or project managers, I'll definitely be putting my hat in the ring.

Send your resume in, we are trying to build a network with developer and project manager skills as we gain projects.

Just an add on, absolutely send us resumes if you have development experience, I can't promise a right away scenario but at least you'll have options as we have projects come up.

I had a good interview this morning. Appears that it would be a good fit for me and for them.

Fingers crossed.

I don't know if they still have this, but they used to have a quiz that you could take and see whether your base knowledge was "good enough". I took it before I did the CFA and I felt that was actually a decent measure.

With the "Brain Drain" thread and the layoff threads active, is there any interest in a positively themed AMA thread where folks outside of O+G careers in Calgary or that have switched from O+G successfully to another career line can share their stories with people that want to hear them? Getting a checklist from a few folks that have been successful at making a switch may help a few by providing a resource where they can ask questions and read responses. Details can be vague enough to keep identities anonymous.

Anyway...a thought instead of doing it in PM.

Hey everyone, I wanted to ask how efficient it is to directly call organizations about job postings? If that is a better method than relying on direct online applications.

Im wondering if the extra effort is worth it in the application process.

Both

We just had signed up a project that incorporates some web development, forms and a algorithm based back end to create specific reports

We are working towards signing another one where the application will need to be optimized as a SaaS application.

Add on talking to my boss this morning he does want to start moving on the developer side, and mostly on the junior developer role as we are starting to gain some good traction on projects. We'd like to at least start moving potential candidates through the process of engaging and letting them know what we do and what they could be doing and gauging interest.

Please submit resumes to the email address above or any questions.

Again, I want to emphasize that I want to give members of this community the first opportunity to apply before we go out to general job boards.

I got an email this afternoon for a second interview on Thursday, for the position I interviewed for last week.

This position is perhaps the most inline to my experience of any application I’ve put in yet, at least top 2.

High hopes, and I’m definitely feeling encouraged after feeling a little down earlier in the day.
