Icon55 Sabres re-sign Sam Reinhart (1 yr, $5.2 mil)

Sabres PR @SabresPR
The Sabres have signed forward Sam Reinhart to a one-year contract with an AAV of $5.2 million.

Singing a player already under team control is hardly going all in. It’s signing their players.

I believe he's suggesting they are just committing one year to Reinhart, so that they have options on Hall next season.

It’s a good move by Reinhart. His point totals are sure to rise playing with Eichel and Hall

I figured it would be around 5.5-6M to get Reinhart on a 6 year deal so this is not great for a one year bridge imo.

Sam is a real solid player for $5.2m, and will still be under team control next season. Nothing to really dislike about this deal, low-risk. If he lights it up he gets a bigger deal next year and then both sides will look for term too.

Why? He’s still an RFA

The upside of 1 yr deals is that players have to try. I don’t mind the strategy even though the AAV is likely higher. I suspect on 1 yr deals you get above average effort and performance. Personally I’ve wondered about that strategy for awhile because then you can bail on players that don’t live up to contracts and never have buyout issues, like the Flames, who have for example $2.7 or so million in dead cap space that would have been handy this off-season.

However probably easier said than done as many players unlikely to only sign up for 1 yr.

I agree. With all the Gaudreau trade talks Reinhart was mentioned a lot. I thought the Flames could sign him to 5.5 to 6 mil for 6 or 7 years. Unless its a Buffalo thing and he won't committ to them im glad we didn't go hard after him. He must want close to 7 to buy ufa years

Or Reinhart feels he has more to prove and would rather sign long term when an increase in cap is in sight.

At this rate that won't happen for 3 years.

Unless they are willing to let him walk next year as a RFA, I don’t see what options this gives them.

In any event, the comment was that by signing him for one year, the Sabres were going all in, and then blowing it all up next year.

I wonder how confident they can be in their goaltending though.

It’ll be a lot easier to plan for when fans have actually returned/a plan is in place and in sight.

Buffalo can’t possibly expect to do anything with Carter Hutton in goal - David Rittich should be an appealing target for them.

They just re-signed Linus Ullmark. However, he's no star.

Possibly the expansion draft has something to do with this as well, as an RFA he'd still be eligible to be picked, but maybe without a contract, he's less desirable??? or he figures he can dictate the terms of his new contract with Seattle (or Buffalo if not selected).

This gives him an ok bump in salary ($5.2M from $3.65M) and sets the qualifying offer...probably hopes to out play it, and get another bump!
