Wasn't Olympic participation negotiated in the return to play agreement?
Not really against it. I love top tier Olympic hockey, but screw the Chinese government.

I feel like this was always a known thing but they had the CBA obligation. Are they now suggesting they are trying to convince players not to go? Want to amend the CBA?

As much as I love the Olympics I hope they don't go. Too much risk.

I’m not against the idea as well, with new variants kicking up and the Olympics seemingly appearing unprepared to go along with all the brutal news coming out about the Chinese government and it’s officials I understand the NHL’s decision if they don’t allow the players to go. It’s a big deal to have the league back on schedule and the variables presented by the Olympics could derail the season in pretty short order.

This has nothing to do with the Chinese government and everything to do with money.

Good. It's absolutely crazy that the Olympics are even happening.
European countries are close to lock downs. Places like Australia have Quarantine camps...
But hey let's fly the best players to China and expose them all to huge risks. Sounds pretty dumb and a huge risk for the NHL.
Any player that goes and gets sick should not be paid for time missed.

Let's leave the political BS out of it. Liberalism and political bullyism on all sides has nothing to do with sports. News and social media are like propaganda. The only ones that really suffer are the athletes who have trained for several years preparing for all of this and they may either get nothing out of it or have to wait several more years just because of political BS.

I suppose you were just as supportive of Nazi Germany holding the games back in the day as well.
Yup seems fine

Will they have an alternate schedule so there isn’t a gap if they don’t go to the Olympics?

Great question, it would seem silly to leave February with the 3 week gap between games if players don’t end up going.

They did draft an alternate schedule as I recall.
Also don't forget a lot of the stars may not even make the trip what with the All Star game in Vegas just prior to the Olympics.

NHL players have trained for several years to go to the Beijing Olympics?
This is not political, this is about 3 week quarantine rules if they catch covid over there.

If you have a subscription to the Athletic, Lebrun asked Fehr about it: https://theathletic.com/3008211/2021...nors-meetings/
Here's a snippet:
Quote:
At this point in time, the Olympics are still a go, NHLPA executive director Don Fehr told The Athletic Thursday afternoon.
“My assumption is that you always have a series of problems with respect to an event like this and those things are complicated by COVID obviously and they’re still being worked out,’’ Fehr said over the phone from Toronto. “We’re in frequent communication with the players, with the IIHF (and) I expect it’s certainly possible we will be directly (in touch) with the IOC, and we’ll see what develops. Our target date for making a decision, the initial date under the agreement, is not until Jan. 10. But you know, unless and until someone says otherwise, I’m going to assume we’re going to be there.’’
There are a few issues the NHLPA would like to get more clarity on from IOC and IIHF officials, including what happens to a player at the Olympics if he tests positive for COVID-19 with regards to the logistics and procedures of that player’s quarantine. How long would he be kept out?
“Sure, players have questions about that and we don’t have final answers yet,’’ Fehr said. “We don’t even have the ‘playbook’ from the IOC with all the rules and regulations. We expect that soon, but we haven’t seen it.’’

This guy gets it.
Literally the only people who suffer due to the actions of the Chinese government are/would be athletes that can't go to the olympics.
