"People in Calgary" is more like 4 or 5 people in a city with a million people. And they shouldn't chop down trees to build a light rail? They absolutely should chop down trees in the name of progress. A light rail is way better for the environment than those trees ever will be.

A Missouri woman kept her autistic son in a field for days without food, water or his medication until he died, police said.

Kimberly Lightwine repeatedly told police she killed her son after the two were found in a Missouri field on August 29. Police found Lightwine face down, wearing only a pair of panties and her son, Austin Anderson dead about 15 to 20 feet away from his mother, wearing a diaper that “appeared to be full.” Temperatures that day rose to 93 degrees in the area, east of Morrisville, Mo.

Lightwine, 42, told Polk County detective Billy Simpson she had driven to the field with her son after taking methamphetamine. She said “she and God brought her baby into this world and that she had to help God take him out,” Simpson wrote in a probable cause statement provided by the Bolivar Herald-Free Press.

The mother of a 17-year-old accused of being responsible for the death of a 70-year-old man in a crash on Circle Drive says she begged a Saskatoon judge earlier that day to place her son in custody because he was high on drugs.
The mother, in an interview on Thursday, said her son was high during an appearance Wednesday in Saskatoon provincial court on breach of probation charges. His identity is protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
She said she pleaded with the judge, the boy’s lawyer and the prosecutor to place him in custody, but he was released. He was allegedly involved hours later in the fatal crash.

Court records show the teen pleaded guilty on May 29, 2015 to a charge of aggravated assault stemming from an altercation at a bar in December 2013. He was sentenced to six months in open custody and three months in supervised custody, to be followed by 18 months on probation.
His mother said he had made strides in turning his life around since his release, but broke the conditions of that release when he started using drugs.

The first one basically states that Latinos and Blacks are less likely to engage in "outdoorsy" activities and then discusses the underlying reasons why, and the second is about how the use of algorithms in decision making processes can bias the processes against people of colour.

Yes... as follows.

There are reasons, of course, why people of color are underrepresented in the backcountry. For many, the wilderness, historically, is dangerous territory. Escaped slaves passed through forests full of danger, much of it posed by other people. Mexican and Japanese immigrants and African American sharecroppers worked to exhaustion in the fields. These brutal histories may help explain why some groups might not be drawn to the idea of spending time — let alone sleeping — outdoors.
