Depends on who else is available including from other teams.
They will want a combination of youth and experience.
If the Flames expose Sam or Kylington, I could see them easily taking one of them over Gio.

In my opinion Gio would be worth more to them for even currency for trade. He’s worth at least a first round at the deadline if not more for a team pushing to win a cup.
Can’t say that Bennett or Kyllington is worth that.

The fact that he has more trade value than others you would protect is a very good reason.

I don't see any way the Flames can protect either of Bennett or Kylington and I think it's pretty likely Flames will have to expose a better asset than either of them.

Why would they have to expose a better asset?
Literally that is who is their at this point. They'd be crazy to sign anyone to a NMC this offseason. Tre is preparing.
Even if we sign Hall, I feel like Gaudreau is gone after next season before the expansion draft for assets that aren't needed to be protected.

If the Flames don't re-sign Brodie or Hamonic or replace them with anyone worthwhile and don't add to the forward core at all, then they can keep everyone and also be in the draft lottery next year.

Replace Brodie or resign, but don't give a NMC to them. One of Brodie/Hamonic/Gustafsson/Forbot.
Or one of the many other UFA's that will have a hard time finding work because the cap is not going up.

I'm all for Sami Vatanen. I think an all Finn pair of D men in Valimaki/Vatanen would be awesome.

Is he headed to UFA?
He got traded to Carolina when they loaded up with like 8 top 4 D men didn't he?
He also reminds me of Gustafson. Very talented D man on a stacked team (Anahiem). But he is injury prone.
I hope we fill that number 4 spot with an offensive specialist like Vatanen or Gustafsson.

Okay but if the Flames re-sign and expose TJ Brodie, that's definitely a better asset than Bennett or Kylington.

I don't mind Sami Vatanen as a player, but he's extremely injury prone. Durability problems tend to only get worse with age.
If he was to be signed, it would be on a contract that assumes he plays 50-60 games per year.

The NMCs are basically as situation specific as the player wants them to be..
So Lucic would agree to waive his NMC for Seattle in the expansion draft, allowing him to be left unprotected for the draft, but not necessarily for a trade afterwards (as unlikely a scenario as that would be).
Similar to players giving a list of teams they'd accept a trade to. Or Iginla basically limiting his NMC to Pittsburgh at the last minute when the two offers were on the table. Scott Hartnell put a time limit on his ('I'll agree to waive to go to these teams before training camp'. No deal was made in time, so he withdrew his waiver).

First Line Centre

Gaudreau
Monahan
Tkachuk
Lindholm
Mangiapane
Dube
Bennett
Andersson
Hanifin
Kylington
Rittich
I love Gio and Backlund but they are getting older and have big cap hits.
I expect a lot of backlash from Bennett/Kylington doubters - which is fair.
I expect to have a different list by the time the draft is happening. Hopefully Tre is active this offseason.

If you trade Kylington, you're not getting much in return. Maybe a 3rd
If you trade Gio, especially at the 2022 trade deadline to a contender, you likely get a 1st
that is why I'd protect Gio

With that logic, better off to trade him a year sooner for guys you don't need to protect anyway (and/or more picks)
I love Gio, but the more I think of it there's no way the Flames should be wasting a protection on him for the expansion draft, vs what they could gain.
Expansion drafts should be asset management, not sentiment management.
