The sounds of the game when there are no fans

As Winnipeg Jets star Mark Scheifele was attended to by Jets medical staff, sounds of concern migrated across the ice.
“Need a stretcher,” said the referee, indicating to medical personnel on the Jets bench.
“Scheif, stay down,” urged a Jets teammate.
“I’m pretty sure it’s broken,” said a Calgary Flames player, conferring with the referee.
“#### off, #### off, #### off,” yelled Jets coach Paul Maurice. It wasn’t immediately clear if he was yelling at Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk or the officials.
“He got him on the back of his ####ing leg — look at the ####ing video!” Maurice later added, this time clearly at the officials. It was a claim Maurice would repeat postgame during his media availability.

In the arena, it was a terrifying moment. Scheifele howled in pain, a guttural bellow that could be heard throughout the rink.
Minutes passed. Finally, mercifully, Scheifele skated toward the tunnel, supported by Jets medical staff and teammate Nathan Beaulieu.
As he crossed the red line, Tkachuk moved to approach him, offering an apologetic stick tap.
“Don’t ####ing touch him,” came a rebuke from the Jets bench, one Tkachuk abided by, skating back to his side.

From the very first shift, the on-ice chatter vibrated throughout the arena.
“Hey, mother ####er!” someone yelled from the Jets bench at Flames defender Rasmus Andersson after he stood up a Jets forward at the blue line.
“Keep it going, rookie!” yelled a player on the Flames bench at second-year Jets blueliner Tucker Poolman.
