Doesn't really matter what feeling you got about it :P Listened to the Treliving interview twice myself. Based on Treliving himself he said they make lists of young players they target around the league who would help their positions of weakness, in this case goal scoring top 6 wingers. He said most of said young players aren't available but in Shinkaruk's case he was. Paraphrasing of course.

Why would we want Galchenyuk, a center, when we just flipped Granlund, a center, because he wasn't going to play on the top six with Bennett shifting back to play center?
Galchenyuk makes no sense unless you want him playing on the 3rd line - which you wouldn't.

First Line Centre

The forward market is flooded. I can't see Hudler getting a good return. The defensive market is the seller's market

Think Galchenyuk plays the wing more often then center at the moment.

Blues have put Brian Elliott on IR to be re-evaluated in 4 weeks.
They might be looking to shore up goaltending depth just in case.

Now you could probably either get a really good prospect (better than Shinkaruk) or include him in a larger deal for something else important. With having Monahan, Bennett, Stajan, Jankowski, Shore, Colborne, Bouma, Jooris, and Arnold all being able to play center and all of those guys being either NHL ready or close in Janko/Arnold's case, making Backlund expendable could be an important move for the team.
|
I don't think he's going to be dealt. Sure, his value may be peaking. But we don't have to deal away key players just because their value is high. I mean he's not untouchable and if someone blows your socks off sure.
Treliving talked about building from the middle out. We're just about to get to the point where our centre depth is solid and you wanna deal away one of top 3 centres? I don't see anybody ready right now to replace exactly what Backlund is bringing. I mean if somebody was immediately available to replace him it might be a different story.
But expendable? Backlund is far from expendable right now. Maybe in a year or two. But he's a good guy, great 3rd line centre, wants to be here. Seems like the kind of guy you wanna keep IMO.

Galchenyuk could be shifted to the wing if Bennett converts to centre. It's easier to move a C to wing.

Not if you can add a top 6 forward without moving Backlund. It's not like Backlund is the only valuable trade piece we have.
So yeah keeping him is bolstering the forwards.

He won't be top 6 when Bennett is fully developed. He'll be an elite 3rd line centre who helps us win.

That's why I said most and not all. So guys who aren't part of the core who have trade value are....a bunch of older guys who the flames want to replace. The team has to make some good trades moving forward and are going to had to give up some value to get value.
Treliving is on hockey central at noon right now.

I always thought he played wing and the Habs have tried and failed to convert him to centre?

Nope. Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Frolik, Backlund, Bouma, Ferland up front. I wouldn't say that is an unreasonable core to move forward with and supplement.
I don't know where some fans got the idea that only high end of top line players can be "core" but I think it's important to have some core players anchoring your 3rd line and energy line. Backlund is a key player for us. Bouma is an identity player for our role players, he sets the example in terms of competitiveness, physicality, effort, self-sacrifice. Ferland is our only power forward and those are key in our division.
These guys aren't untouchable but those are the guys I would choose to build around unless you get crazy offers for them.

That's 7 out of 12 forward spots. Two or three of which are not top 6 guys. So over half the team is "core"? Then the Flames are going to be (a) a dynasty and (b) in deep deep cap trouble.
IMO a third line player probably is never a core guy.
