How does it take 4 years to pop a guy?

It seems the NHL drug testing system needs an overhaul

I'd go the opposite. Bigger chance that it's one of the few teams that isn't looking the other way when it comes to PED than it's the only team that is...

I have a lot more respect for the ones that own up to it rather than lying about it.

Maybe by saying he was surprised at testing positive, he meant that he was surprised that his masking agent didn't work.

Agent is going on damage control

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Clarification. There will be no appeal. The PA can grieve the Golden Knights position on Zykov “knowingly” taking a banned substance. Zykov’s agent, Rolland Hedges denies his client knew. “He did not knowingly take a banned substance”. “I stand behind my client 100%.”

Another Meldonium moment like Maria Sharapova where it was legal for a time and then it was not?

If you squint hard there's a way to reconcile it. He knew he took them - he just figured he masked it properly, therefore he doesn't know how he tested positive.

ETA: I see I'm behind Red_Baron on this.

Exactly, or

Agreed. I don't think he is lying. I think that the so called "conflicting info" could make sense in a singular truthful scenario.

1. He tests positive for a PED and has no clue why he tested positive for a PED.
2. Finds out that some supplement he has been taking for 4 years is actually banned and considered a PED (ie: Nothing nefarious, but even inhalers qualify at times as PEDs). He knowingly took it, but was unknowing it wasn't allowed.
3. Chats with McPhee stating that he knows he's been taking the substance he tested positive for.
4. Openly admits he took the substance, won't appeal. Understands ignorance doesn't forgive the fact he took the substance and will serve his penalty.

I seem to recall that after Cherepanov passed away, many Russian athletes stated taking some supplement to prevent that heart condition from happening to them. But this supplement while not banned in Russia nor all international competitions is banned in enough competitions that it has a big enough profile in the spot light.

We need to move to the next stage of freakshow athletes.
I read a report not long ago about high school and college pitchers having elective Tommy John surgery.

Wild speculation here:
VZ: "I don't know what happened, I've been taking X for years and never tested positive."
GM: "X has Y in it, and Y is banned."
VZ: "I didn't know that."

Probably because he has been a fringe NHL player that barely plays. We all know there is something in the water in Edmonton, so probably dodged a test or two with false positives there.
