Best actual depiction of war film is Black Hawk Down.
Black Hawk Down suffered from the theatrical release being 'meh' and the director's cut elevating it. It was a problem with the era, as epics like Troy or Kingdom of Heaven were almost unwatchable in the theatrical cut.
Once studios started screwing things up at the production level instead of the editing level, the need to hunt down a superior copy diminished.

Black Hawk Down also suffered as a movie by adhering so closely to its source material, its is damn near a docudrama, but while it made for a realistic movie it never made for much of a story for anyone who wasn't a military buff.
Most of the time when I watch a movie, I know it's the only time I'm ever going actively watch it. Like, I'll watch something if it's on and I'm not in really in control of the selection process, but in terms of me actually putting something on to watch, I would say that 95% are in the once-and-done category. There's a bunch that I've watched two or three times, but the list of movies I watch regularly is pretty small:
A Few Good Men
Inglourious Basterds
Definitely, Maybe
Love, Actually (every Christmas)
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Usual Suspects
High Fidelity
Se7en
Bourne Ultimatum
Superbad
My Cousin Vinny
That's about all I can think of off the top of my head right meow. These are movies I watch at least once a year.
My nomination for the perfect reboot of a nearly perfect original film: Blade Runner 2049.
