As many have posted, I am always late to games. I finished Horizon Zero Dawn this year, which probably takes the cake, but it's a 2017 release. I've played a bit of God of War and it's pretty good. I bet it'll end up being Spider Man for me but I probably won't play that for a while yet.

Don't want to start a console war here as somebody who owns and XBox One, PS4 Pro, and a Switch it's dissapointing to see how few XBox exclusives there were again in 2018.
So far I think the only exclusive mentioned as a potential game of the year candidate was Forza Horizon 4.
Two years in a row now where outside of the Forza series, Cuphead, and maybe Sea of Thieves there just weren't any intriguing exclusives for the Xbox.
PS4 + Switch is easily the best combo of systems to own at this point in time IMO.

Even moreso, they're not even exclusive. I play Forza on PC. No interest in ever owning an Xbox

I haven't bought an Xbox One game since Gears of War 4 and that isn't even an exclusive. The only thing I use it for is EA Access and Game Pass. My PS4 on the other hand is getting alot of use with it's exclusives.

Updated again, I knew there were some Monster Hunter fans kicking around.
Smash still holding it's lead over Red Dead though.

I think the only 2018 release I've played so far is Spider-Man, so I guess that gets my vote.

1. Red Dead Redemption 2
Only other "new" game is the NEXT Update for No Man's Sky (if that counts) - and I would rate that game as a favourite (but below RDR2)
I tend to be a patient (aka cheap) gamer, so most of the games I play are from previous years. That and not enough time to dive into too many games.

Honourable mention goes to Destiny 2: Forsaken. I’d put it on my list if it weren’t technically an expansion.

I can't decide between Spider-man and RDR2. Can I vote for both of them in a tie for first?
They are both incredible games that captivated me while also having some shortcomings. Spider-man has brilliant movement and combat with fun upgrades and a great story but the open world is shallow and the progression is linear. RDR2 has this amazing open world that immerses me like nothing before and offers a variety of ways to play the game however the controls are difficult and combat is nothing special.
I saw a few votes for Far Cry 5. This was the other 2018 game I have played and it was a little disappointing. The game play was solid as usual but I found some of the changes didn't really work out and I could not get interested in the story.

Looking through the list I guess I haven't played a whole lot of titles from 2018. Being away from home for most of the year with only a laptop will do that I suppose.
1. Banner Saga 3 (2)
2. Battletech (2)
3. Vampyr (1)
I am hoping to play through GRIS before the end of the year but who knows if I'll have the time. Also, I know it doesn't count but Sunset Overdrive came out on PC a month ago and it's a blast. Would easily make it onto my list if it were allowed.

1. AC Odyssey - Looks gorgeous on my computer and I really enjoy the combat. Playing it on nightmare is a fun challenge that actually makes you really plan out your attacks. I also really enjoy the historical component.
2 The Crew 2 - Racing games are usually not my bag but I really enjoyed this game. I love the fact that you get to use so many different types of vehicles. Also pretty graphically amazing.
3 Far Cry 5 - Great looking game but the combat is not great imo.

Man, I seem to have ignored all of the bigguns. Smash, Pokemon and Spiderman all do not appeal to me, and RDR2 is a game I'm personally going to wait for a sale on.
So, that makes my personal GOTY pretty easy: God of War.
2. Octopath Traveler
3. Astro Bot
4. Shadow of the Tomb Raider (even if the story sucked)
5. Moss

If GTA5 is any indication, you're going to be waiting a LONG time.
