So I'm losing my job...
Hey folks,
I just got word that my position is being altered to include skills I don't really have, and thus, I am being replaced.
Does anyone have any leads as to possible IT work? I can provide a resume (privately), but as a quick summary, I've been a Network Admin for the last 10+ years. I have a ton of experience in network design and deployment. Virtualization. Hardware/software. Exchange server install/manage/admin, (Windows) domain server, like literally the entire spectrum.
About the only thing I can't do at a professional level is coding. I can do UX design, application/service testing, QA, etc, and I understand coding and how everything fits together, I just don't know any particular language well enough to code in it for a living.
Thanks for reading this, and any leads would be 100% ridiculously appreciated!

I hear ya man. My position was phased out a couple weeks ago.
Losing your job stinks, but I am looking at it as a chance to change things up.
I know nothing about IT stuff so cant help you there.

Good luck! I too lost my IT job back in June, still looking for a new one.
Get searching on LinkedIn, Indeed, Workopolis, etc.

Scanline in Vancouver is looking for a Head of IT. Not sure if anyone is interested in moving to this crazy #### hole but there are some VFX IT jobs out there. I am hoping to hire but not until next year I imagine.

Honestly I think your're best looking in Toronto or Vancouver right now for high-paying IT jobs, the market is still somewhat muted here in Alberta.

I lost my previous IT job in May but it was a good opportunity for a change. When you apply for EI, you can sign up for the job bank notifications. I get a couple of notifications for IT positions every day. LinkedIn is sending them as well.
The positions at the managed service providers (Longview, Scalar, Graycon) are always in flux with people coming and going so you could apply there as well and let them connect you with the clients they need help with.

Firstly, very sorry to hear about this...
This free event might be of interest...
https://www.pivottech.ca/
It's super important to think about opportunities to upgrade your skills and be flexible...if you want to invest in development skills and are willing to work your ass off...you can look at https://lighthouselabs.ca/
There is also a Alberta Job grant that will pay 100% of retraining expenses (up to $15k) if a company hires an unemployed person and wants to retrain them... http://www.albertacanada.com/opportu.../jobgrant.aspx
It might be less work to upgrade skills and have options then to chase the jobs for your existing skill set...
Best of luck

Thanks a lot for the encouragement and suggestions, folks. It means a great deal for sure. I feel like I’ve been pretty fortunate to have remained employed through most of the chaos of the last couple years, and hopefully things pick up soon for everyone!

I got an invite to attend this event:
https://www.hackerx.org/
Says invite only, but you can purchase tickets, so no idea if it's actually invite only.
https://hackerx-calgary-october2017-dev.eventbrite.com/
Kind of like speed dating with companies. I probably won't go this year as I've got a gig currently.

Good luck to you. Lots of non-profits seek IT volunteers if you are looking for a resume builder and a chance to network.
Don't get discouraged!

Sorry to hear this guys. Hope you find something soon.
Here's a thought though. Have you ever wanted to open your own business?
I know for years I complained about working for others and then decided it was up to me to change something.
Me.
I know it's the last thing people want to hear but sometimes change is for the best and becoming your own boss isnt always easy but it's really rewarding at the end of the day calling your own shots.
I still have to constantly upgrade and reboot to keep up but being versatile and being able to think on my feet has always been my strength.
I have several I T buddies who had to do this as well in your positions and they Thank themselves every day for embracing the change and becoming better for it.
Set your mind to anything and you can do whatever you want.
Be positive and good luck.

If your looking for a classroom of sorts, lighthouse has a good program if your looking to pivot towards dev-ops or developer.
Alternatively, look into one of the udacity nano-degrees. They partner with some large tech companies, hire people who take their courses, and generally do a good job of providing a quality education.

Keep in mind too that you can still collect EI while you're upgrading your skills if it's industry related.

If it's an option, come to Vancouver, loads of IT work here. Just prepare to bitch about gas prices, constant winter rain and rent daily like I do, but 100% don't regret moving here for work/life (I'm in Supply Chain FYI)

Going towards DevOps is an interesting path IMO, I've kind of been doing the same thing except pivoting from pure dev to devops, I'm liking it a lot.

Where did you graduate? Most post-secondaries offer career services to alum. It can vary on cost, how many years the service is available, etc. If you went to MRU you're in luck as Career Services is free in perpetuity for any grads. They can help with career transitioning and support in a job search.
Good luck!

I may not respond right away, but I'm reading everything, and every single post has been appreciated. Thanks again for the support!
Also, I like that this is turning into a really great resource-focused discussion, as there are a few others on this board in the same spot as I am.
