It’s good to invest into the most important position but this team still has holes, we need Brodie back and another solid Dman if we’re serious about making the playoffs.

I think this is one year too long at that AAV, but one extra year when it comes to UFA is a pretty mild overpayment. Sometimes you have to give a little more than fair value in free agency. So overall, not a bad signing long term.

Obviously short term this has the potential to be a huge difference maker.

I thought it would be 5 mill but ok, this was the market price and probably only half a mill to mill more then the Canucks offer.

Better than 9.75x7 years, so I am happy with it

Hopefully this fixes the Flames in net for at least 4 seasons. I still think Parsons and Wolf are legitimately great prospects in the system.

Rittich is a great backup for now as well, and I think could develop further, but it will be interesting to see if he ends up being retained or not. With Calgary being rumoured on Hall and so on, I think there are going to be further moves to be made (obviously on D).

Here is my take on it, I've been digging into this a lot over the last couple days and here is where I've landed.

Pros:

- Markstrom has improved each of the last three seasons and could be on the upswing, had a great season last year.

- Over the last three seasons as a whole he's a top 15 starter in the league that you can count on for 50+ games, that can't be overlooked

- Had a good playoffs and showed he can step up when the pressure goes up, which is big for a goalie

Cons:

- He only has one truly great (top 5) type of season in his career and the risk is this is the outlier when you look back at his career

- He's on the wrong side of the aging curve and it's possible this contract looks bad as soon as two seasons from now

- 6 x $6M is a little much but you always need to overpay by $1M and by at least one year on term to get a UFA.

In the end you need to commit yourself to a goalie long term and the Flames have been able to do that with this move. IMO whether he's just great or average it's likely that Markstrom is our starting goalie for at least the next 4 seasons now. The big thing now is that he just needs to live up to that contract. He doesn't need to be top 5 in the league again, but he needs to be a top 15 goalie that we can count on in the playoffs.

That timing might work out okay because if Wolf can establish himself as a true starter it doesn't hurt to be paying Markstrom $6M for the final two seasons of this deal to be a backup/tandem if Wolf is still on his ELC or 2nd contract.

Tim and Sid like the signing. Funny they rattled off the name of every goalie Tre has had to "put up with" since becoming GM.

As a percentage of the cap, this is 7.36%. Kipper's final deal was 11.6% of the cap at the time of signing.

At the current cap, Kipper's deal would have a $9.45 million cap hit at the same percentage.

Is he though? He hasn't won a single playoff series as captain.

His offense was putrid and his defence was average. Everyone who was terrified of his final years of that 6 year contract was justified.

IMO it might have been in the mid 5 range with that NMC but it seems we held out there (unless someone is seeing the NMC reported elsewhere.)

I think it is great that we got him at 6 and didnt have to go into a 7th year. I expected 7 years and an NMC based off of reports/ alleged other offers.

I expect that the problem with the Canucks offer had nothing to do with anything other than the NMC in relation to Expansion.

I like the AAV but the term is a year longer than I would have liked. Big time bet by Treliving, but the Flames finally get some stability in net instead of the back-and-forth routine.

One of the things I really like about Markstrom is he is what I consider a low-variance goaltender in that you aren't getting the crazy highs, but you also aren't getting the crazy lows. What you get on a nightly basis is consistent goaltending.

the salary cap at the time was $56.7M. The equivalent salary today would be $8.38M

(which Markstrom would have gotten, if he already had a Vezina)

We will get better than mid ranger service for 4 out of 6 years. The meat of a goalies prime is generally 30-35. Hope it works put.

Not entirely true. He played at the same level over the past two seasons.

That would be awesome. Having two legit number 1 goalies would leave the Flames in such a strong position.
