Icon39 Panthers trade Jason Demers (12.5% retained) to Coyotes for Jamie McGinn

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Jason Demers' future has been a topic of discussion all summer. Hearing FLA/ARIZ working on a deal the sends him west for Jamie McGinn.

Getting closer and closer to jettisoning all the players the advanced stats guys brought in. Clearly Tallon is on a mission.

I like Demers. I like McGinn. Neither are major difference makers, but Demers did have a very good offensive year last year for him. I think this is because they are ready for Ian McCoshen to make the jump this year. With Matheson and Ekblad, the Panthers have a pretty good young defense core.

@FriedgeHNIC
FLA retains 12.5 per cent of Demers' salary in the McGinn deal w/ARIZ

After a great rookie season, Ekblad has been underwhelming.

He had an equally impressive season as a sophomore, if not more so because he was no longer sheltered and went against top competition. Last year wasn't great, but the whole team was a mess from top to bottom. I think you'll see him rebound well this year.

Here is hoping that Ekblad doesn't get ruined due to concussions.

Could it be because they want to shed some salary, I think I heard somewhere that Tallon is under orders to do just that.

Another terrific move by Chayka and the Coyotes - now they have a legitimate top four on the backend.

Also, don't forget:

Demers is a legitimate top four defenseman. A good one. Jamie McGinn is no one at all.

Arizona's success or lack of success depends entirely on whether their young players can achieve their potential and make the next step to being bona fide NHLers. That hasn't changed. But every move that the team has made this summer has solidified them. They have a solid top 6 center in Derek Stepan, and a guy who could be a decent starter in Raanta. They have a high-end #1 d-man in OEL, and a solid top four with Hjalmarsson, Goligoski and Demers, as well as some depth and youth to fill out the bottom pairing (Chychrun looked quite good last year I thought).

So, yes, Domi and Crouse and Connor and Dvorak and Duclair and Strome and Keller eventually have to look like pros, not just kids, but once a few of them clear that hurdle this could be a pretty damned competitive team in short order.

Who does McGinn supplant on the roster out of the forwards on the bubble of pushing for a spot? If anyone at all?

Nobody that I can think of. Maybe Jared McCann who could have started on the wing on the 3rd line. Henrik Haapala is supposed to have an inside track at a starting job at the moment, but it's far from certain. If both make the team it could push McGinn down to the 4th line.

Huberdeau-Barkov-Dadonov
Haapala?-Trocheck-Vrbata
McCann?-Bjugstad-Malgin
McGinn-McKenzie-Sceviour
Haley

This team has some good centers, but there are so many question marks on the wings it hurts my brain. It's going to be a struggle for this team to score goals this year, so let's hope that Boughner gets them playing a tough defensive game. They'll need it.

Yandle-Ekblad
Matheson-Petrovic
McCoshen-Pysyk

Luongo/Reimer

Did they get traded for each-other already in the past some time? Or were they traded together as a package at some time?

McGinn is a solid 3rd line powerforward. A less skilled Ferland basically. He's a useful player.

They tried to swap him back for gudbranson though at the draft and he would have needed resigning

Tallon just doesn't like Demers

It's nice to see the Coyotes making moves that seem to improve their hockey team, instead of just taking on bad contracts in hopes of hitting the salary floor.
