An Oilers fan suggesting we should trade a defenseman for another butter-soft forward?

Sounds about right

Lazar? why not include Jankowski who will need a new contract next year? Jankowski kicks in 20 goals this year and he will want at least 2x2 bridge contract that Bennett got likely more.

20 disallowed goals aren't getting him 2 mil.

So the line up should be:
JG - SM - Ferly
MT - MB - Fro
CL - SB - KV
MS - MJ - TB

Then whoever had the best pre season should get the 13th spot. Likely not a youngster who needs more seasoning in the AHL. Likely F. Hamilton, S. Foo or a Hathaway type. We will see how it plays out.

I think the 6th/7th D will end up being Bart and Kulak to start the season. I think by mid way we see changes in personnel, the young guys know it is up for grabs at this point.

Valimaki might get 9 games, I wouldn't be surprised to see that and I wouldn't even mind it. He is going to be good. What a pick at 16th.

This season will be exciting! I'll reserve judgement of our keeper situation until the 10 game mark. That is all the leeway I would give them.

And then if they look no better than Elliot and Hiller what would you do?

Pretty self-explanatory. Duchene does not help this team, even if he does play top 6 wing minutes. I don't see him as a guy that would stay in Calgary after 2 years. Even if he did, we've got to re-sign Tkachuk and Bennett. Duchene is just not in the plans.
I mean if Tre was able to work his magic, we could slot Duch at 3LW to pair with Bennett. It would give us 3 lines that would make the opponent sweat at any given time. Not sure what that basis of the trade would be however.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Duchene - Bennett - Foo
Versteeg - Jankowski - Lazar/Brouwer/ShinkarukStajan/Hathaway/Klimchuk

because Foo is going to be markedly better than Versteeg?

Duchene would most likely slot in as a RW on the top line. We also would need to add assets in the trade most likely being Bennett.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Duchene
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Versteeg - Jankowski - Ferland
Stajan - Lazar - Brouwer/Foo

Thats not how line building works. Kessel plays on the third line at times in Pittsburgh. Versteeg would provide Janko with experience and skill. And with my lineup you have drivers on every line

I'm getting off topic, but what are you offering the Avalanche for Duchene if they wouldn't even accept the rumored Hamonic + 1st + prospect from the Islanders?

Then I give Gillies and Rittich a shot, it really couldn't hurt if we start to see silly mistakes from Lack and Smith.

If that doesn't work, I am stumped.

Thing change. It's almost a given that the Duchene trade is going to look a lot like a phaneuf trade. difference being instead of spare forward parts, it'll be a bunch of spare D parts. They don't even have Zadorov signed and he makes their D corps %50 NHL worthy. There's a bunch of magic beans after Barrie, Johnson and Zadorov, and that isnt very high priase.

Doesnt have to be the Flames. But someone is going to get Duchene on a decent deal.

The last couple of pre-season games, there have been a couple of interesting developments. The most balanced line-up, in my opinion.

Tkachuk - Monahan - Ferland
Versteeg - Backlund - Frolik
Gaudreau - Bennett - Foo
Stajan/Lazar - Jankowski - Brouwer

I also think that they might try to pick up one of the extras from Vegas to be the number 5 defenseman. Jon Merrill or Nate Schmidt.

That would be a matchup problem for every team in the league.
I wouldn't worry about icetime for guys like Gaudreau. Roll 3 lines at 16 minutes a piece, 4th line at 12, and give him 1st PP duty. Weapons on every line, and Backlund heavy lifting.

Id like to see Monahan - Tkachuk as a pair. Gaudreau - Bennett together. Backlund - Frolik together . Jankowski 4th line C in between brouwer and stajan.

Chucky - Monahan - Ferland - strong checking line than can wear dmen down and score
Gaudreau - Bennett - Versteeg - offensive zone starts and PP1
Lazar - Backlund - Frolik - D zone starts and PK1 / PP sometimes.
Stajan - Jankowski - Brouwer. Outplay the other teams 4th line.

Foo in the pressbox

1st 2 lines split time evenly and play on the PP1/PP2. Put Bennett and Jonny out against the other teams bottom pairing every time.
Backlund line does the d zone starts and PK1/PP2 sometimes.

I can see very balanced scoring from those 1a - 1b- 1c lines. We need scoring depth. Not just johnny and mony scoring or contributing to 90% of our points. We need identities for lines. A skill line - bennett/johnny/versteeg. A forechecking/physical line - Monahan Tkachuk Ferland. A defensive line Lazar/Backlund/Frolik. A 4th line that can actually play hockey. Stajan - Janko - Brouwer. I know troy sucked last season but he can improve.

On D I want to see Gio Hamilton then Brodie Hamonic, then Stone - Andersson. Bartkowski eating popcorn. The rest in the AHL top 4 or back to jr.

It's bewildering reading some of these line combos.

The start to the season would be a disaster for a second year in a row mismatching everyone to that extent.

Gaudreau and Monahan work together and I think that line with Ferland stays together to start.

The 3-M line looks like it sticks as well and so it should.

Bennett-Versteeg seem to mesh and hopefully the work out who has chemistry there.

Beyond that, I don't think there's any chance we see such a dramatic reshuffling of the lines as some of these posts seem to suggest.
