The "terrible" defense gets a bit overplayed here which is understandable, but last years Oilers weren't the the 13/14 Avalanche or the 14/15 Flames.
The Oilers had solid underlying numbers last season.

That's nice and all
Calgary add Hamonic
Edmonton subtracts Sekera
Also Edmonton allowed a lot more shots from the dangerous scoring areas then the Oilers last year.

Why would losing Sekera matter? You've stated numerous times that McDavid and Talbot are the only good players on the team.
If Sekera isn't good, his loss shouldn't matter.
Also, where are you getting your numbers from?
The only place I can find them is Natural stat trick.
That site has Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Chicago, Columbus, and NYR all in the bottom ten for High Danger Scoring chances against.
That's 5 of last year's top ten teams during the regular season. I don't think I would say those teams were all poor defensively last season.

Subtracting Sekera takes the Oilers defence from poor to piss poor.
How do the brainwashed masses up there expect them to seriously contend with that blue line. Everyone is playing a position or two higher than they would be slotted on another team. Who comes in when there's injuries, anybody NHL caliber? I like how their fans just overlook the position entirely. Everybody just hop on Talbot's back again.

I know, I know, it's only preseason, but I can't help but feel a little satisfaction that an Oilers team tonight that has McDavid, Draisatl, Strome, Nuge, Lucic, Maroon, Puljujarvi, Letestu, Jokinen, Russell, Benning, Klefbom, Larsson, Fayne, and has Talbot in net, are losing to the Hurricanes 6-2, with Talbot rocking a standout .786.
Obviously not any indication of what's to come this season, but still haha E=NG

What banners will the Oilers be raising in their home opener? So far I have:
-2017 Final 8
-2017 Vegas odds championship
-2017 Pre-season Pacific division champions

Young Stars 2017 championship
Highest paid NHL player on a second contract award
Special award to Peter Chiarelli for signing McDavid to a not poor contract, doesn't need a specific title
Top northern alberta NHL team, presented by Mark Spector
Most hyped team team 2017 award, presented by representatives of Rogers Sportsnet
followed shortly by the Most overrated team award, awarded by 30 fans of every other NHL team.
Gonna be a long opening night ceremony.

Don't forget hosted by Ron MacLean, who will be sure to mention McDavid atleast once in every sentence.

I don't remember the last time the Flames were more hyped than the Oilers to begin a season. And if you look at the last 12 years of Oilers history, that's unimaginable.

It was probably that 05-06 season when we had arguably the NHL's top forward, top goalie, and an improved supporting cast coming out of the lockout after our Cup run.
And we all know how the Oilers did that season.
Maybe it's better when they're hyped more than the Flames.

Only cool media hipsters pick the Flames over the Oilers to start a season.
Perhaps in a few years they'll be looked back on as the cool ones that picked them before it was the popular pick. Bonus points to those that did in the 00s. Way ahead of the curb.
