Flames Rank the GM's

I just read an article on ESPN (granted not the most expert when it comes to NHL) but I thought the content was interesting as they placed every NHL GM into tiers. Also interesting as we look at GM's to target for the trade deadline to get the best return.

Here is the link but for those who want to save the time here is their list:

http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/2...trade-deadline

The Golden Boys:(The accepted gold standard for general managers. The cream of the crop. They rise to the top)
Lou Lamoriello, Toronto Maple Leafs
Jim Rutherford, Pittsburgh Penguins
Steve Yzerman, Tampa Bay Lightning

The Waiting-for Silver-Boys: (General managers with great track records and universal respect who are still one Stanley Cup away from getting tiered up)
Doug Armstrong, St. Louis Blues
Kevin Cheveldayoff, Winnipeg Jets
Ron Francis, Carolina Hurricanes
George McPhee, Vegas Golden Knights
Bob Murray, Anaheim Ducks
David Poile, Nashville Predators
Ray Shero, New Jersey Devils
Doug Wilson, San Jose Sharks

The Try-Hards: (They swing for the fences. Sometimes they connect. Other times, it's just foul)
Chuck Fletcher, Minnesota Wild
Jarmo Kekalainen, Columbus Blue Jackets
Jim Nill, Dallas Stars
Brian MacLellan, Washington Capitals
Don Sweeney, Boston Bruins
Dale Tallon, Florida Panthers
Brad Treliving, Calgary Flames

The Incompletes: (Hey, they just walked in the door. Cut them a break.)
Rob Blake, Los Angeles Kings
Jason Botterill, Buffalo Sabres

The Misunderstood: (Maligned general managers that might have this thing figured out at some point, because they do have a plan)
Jim Benning, Vancouver Canucks
John Chayka, Arizona Coyotes
Pierre Dorion, Ottawa Senators
Jeff Gorton, New York Rangers
Ron Hextall, Philadelphia Flyers
Joe Sakic, Colorado Avalanche

Skipping ahead to the bottom of the pile is "The Disaster Artists" where you will find Marc Bergevn (Montreal), and Peter Chiarelli (Oilers).

Can't seem to argue with a lot of these. Does Trev seem out of place?

Ron Francis and Kevin Cheveldayoff are a notch too high to me.

Jeff Gorton built the Bruins that Chiarelli takes credit for & had been the defacto GM in NY for years. Sather only started to look competent once he was hired.

This thread reeks of ignorance.

"This thread" merely references the actual ESPN article. Not sure what the point of your comment is.

Why is he in the golden boy list the Lightning have won nothing. That could very well change this spring of course but this is not a ranking from the future.

Was thinking much the same. He's surely in the next tier, needing to actually win it to move up.

Having Chayka at anything higher then being a disaster is weird.

I mean I get that he's the poster boy for the Stats cloud, but realistically he's GM'd a perpetual sewer dweller that's not looking like there's a lick of improvement.

The guy is just terrible and he's fortunate that he's in a dead NHL market or the 40 fans that show up for the games would be calling for his head.

Is that so bad? They are his scouts after all.

He has been very very patient and now has a very talented young team. Do people think he has been too passive?

I think that a GM that has missed the playoffs in 5 out of 6 years and got bounced in the first round in his only playoff appearance isn't a great track record.

I mean its great that the jets are where they are now, but Chevy's indecision and passiveness probably held this franchise back since they arrived in Winnipeg.

He belongs in the Try Hards part of the school room.

Yes. Thank you. The enlightened thread is the Jeff Frickin Gorton thread.

Based on entertainment, Chia has to be at the top. Everything that guy does is amazing! Whenever there's an oiler move over excited to see how bad it is lol

It's funny how Holland used to be the Gold Standard for GM's when Detroit was consistently contending. All of a sudden he doesn't know what he's doing. Last year Chiarelli was the GM darling of the NHL and now he's a laughing stock. Last year Jim Benning was considered a boob and now he's considered a better boob. Lamoriello had a similar track record to Holland including the inevitable decline, then suddenly drafts 1st overall and is a genius again? Is Rutherford among the best because Crosby and Malkin are on the team? Did any of us really think McPhee really put together a great team or did the catch lightning in a bottle this season? A couple years ago Sweeney was a punchline, and now because his team is having a great season he has morphed into a genius?

Just like everything in life, there seems to be a large component of luck involved in addition to job skill when it comes to being a NHL GM. I don't think ranking GMs is really possible unless you are doing it year by year, but even then you'd have to rank them based on what they're trying to accomplish in any given season (eg. win the Cup, build the roster, fill the cupboards, burn to the ground and rebuild, etc.). Ultimately there are so many factors involved from individual coaching decisions, schedules, player illness/injury, contract issues, family stuff, even a single bounce of the puck can turn an entire season around. Judging a GM based on how many Cups they've won doesn't even come close to painting the full picture.

David Poile should be at or near the top of any list like this.
