Axe it, long overdue. Stupid concept, never liked the idea.

For those people who are lamenting whether or not to retire 2, 14, 25, 34... the Avalanche retired 77!?!

MacInnis, Fleury and Iginla should be the only retired numbers. That is more than enough for a team that has been around almost 40 years with one championship. Have a hall or honour or something for other influential players including McDonald, Nilsson, Vernon, Niewendyk, Roberts, Kipprusoff, and Regher.

Many players seem to settle down where they finish their careers, but Chopper is definitely a Flame if you look at his career, especially since he won his Cup and the Conn Smythe here.

Yeah them retiring Bourque is silly IMO. I do have a pretty high threshold for jersey retirement and I get that everyone sees it differently.

Personally I'd only have 9, 12 and 14. Those three plus Maher and Fletcher are the icons of the franchise IMO, and all for different reasons. Which doesn't mean they were the best players or best people either.

I can see Gio getting there, but really needs some post season success.

What is the problem wanting to recognize players, but let the number still be used?

Is it the name Forever a Flame that has all the panties in a bunch?

I think it is too similar to retiring a number so therefore reeks of "we like you but not THAT much".
If you are going to honor some players that aren't worthy of full retirement - then make it totally different. The suggestion for a place elsewhere where the history and key contributors is honored is a great idea.
If you want it to be different make it REALLY different
But as it stands you now have this weird two tier system up there.

When ppl think of Al MacInnis they think St. Louis Blues.

When ppl think of Joe Nieuwendyk they think Dallas Stars.

These two guys even identify themselves as a Blue and a Star as they have each held a front office job in each organization.

Meanwhile Lanny is a Flame and is still a big part of the organization, Iggy is a Flame through and through, Vernon is a hometown boy, and Fleury and Kipper were true Flames as well.

I like two categories because Al and Joe, although great, moved onto other organizations and developed strong roots after leaving Calgary.

The bar is set high to be a retired Flame and I like that.

Keep it how it is with one category for Flames legends who were a part of our history but dont quite meet an unofficial criteria to be a retired Flame.

You think Leafs fans dont think of Sittler and McDonald? He was a fan favorite many out east identify with Lanny as a Leaf

Good points.

It's really difficult in differentiating the most deserving players, especially as fans.

So with Lanny, Vernon, and Iggy in the rafters, clearly Fleury belongs there.

Personally, I think Chopper does as well.

For me a retired player should be a franchise icon not just a good player. MacInnis never crossed into that territory for me. Plus he seems to identify more with the blues and think that franchise is better, and he left on a sour note. For me it should be 9 12 and 14. Vernon wouldn't be up there either if I was deciding. Fleury is a mess but he bled calgary flames red.

I am fine with 9, 30, 12, 14. I would like 2 as well but I can see the argument against it with his long time with St Louis. Go with those 4 and it keeps the number low.

He was certainly a fan favorite with the Leafs and some great memories for their fans but I would say his goal in game 6 cemented his legacy as a Flame > Leaf. Plus that must piss off Leafs fans to no end so there’s that nice benefit too.

His goal in game 6 against the Islanders in OT also cemented his legacy with many Leaf fans from the 70s era.

Some people are so jealous of wanting a player to only be a Flame that they can't handlewhen guys like Nieuwendyk and MacInnis left town and played a long time elsewhere and even took front office jobs in those cities. Somehow that makes them not worthy of Honor or recognition by the Flames because jealous fans can't handle that. Get over yourselves. Why can't a player be recognized by two or more teams? The player was great for more than one team and they want to recognize that. That's all up to the team.
