Phillips is missing that extra gear that a player like that needs to be successful in the NHL. He's not as fast, elusive, or tenacious as Johnny, and he has to be.
He's beginning to remind me of Konstantin Pushkarev.

Playing a game at 11am (10 local) on a Monday morning probably has everybody out of sorts.

Came here to post this, you nailed it.
It's actually quite scary how similar they play, "stabby" with the extremities and very "float" like with very little if any athleticism. More meat shield then save attempt.

If they are tired now they'll never make it through an 82 game grind.

I guess, but these are players who probably haven't played a 10am hockey game since they were 12 years old. NHL teams who don't regularly play afternoon games routinely struggle with the Sunday afternoon matinees - nobody plays on Monday mornings.
It's just understandable if they're not all there.

Can't you apply that logic to the Jets players too? Why don't they seem to be suffering?

McDonald has the raw tools you need but he's far from a polished product. He's got size, athleticism and compete. He needs to quiet down his game a little bit, I think he overplays some pucks. That's a correctable mistake. Sometimes goalies takes years and years. Plenty of goalies took until their mid or late 20's to develop fully. Hard to write them off when they're that young.
The nice thing is that with Parsons, Gililes, Rittich and Schneider it makes McDonald basically a bonus chance at a goalie. Nobody is expecting much from him and that may allow him to surprise sometime down the line. Basically we can forget about him and if he suddenly gives us reason to take notice then great. The fact he was a 2nd rounder is ancient history at this point, no point lamenting it.
